Subaru Debuts New All-Electric AWD Compact Crossover 2026 Subaru Uncharted

Most overlanders know that wherever they may explore, they are likely to come across a Subaru, from the trails to the campsite, highway to coffee shop. This Japanese automotive giant has collaborated with a Japanese automotive superpower to present a vehicle that will no doubt be as popular with the canoe and camping crowd as it is with city slickers. Subaru is the Carhartt of cars, and there is a very good reason why the brand is so popular with modern weekend explorers. The big question is, will the fastback-styled EV Subaru be as popular as the Outback or Crosstrek, which together sold close to 250,000 new units in 2024?

Subaru Corporation unveiled its new all-electric compact crossover, the 2026 Subaru Uncharted, during a press event in New York City in late July 2025. The Uncharted is designed to offer a blend of daily usability, driving refinement, and electric performance calibrated for diverse lifestyles. Built on Subaru’s collaboration with Toyota, the Uncharted was jointly developed under the theme “Let’s make ever-better cars together,” leveraging Toyota’s expertise in powertrains and battery technology and Subaru’s tuning of suspension, chassis, and all-wheel-drive systems. It shares its TNGA–based architecture with the Toyota C-HR+, while Subaru engineers provided drivetrain calibration consistent with the brand’s tradition of vehicle control and capability.

The Uncharted is offered in both front-wheel drive and symmetrical all-wheel drive configurations, which will likely be most popular with our outdoor-loving readers. A 74.7-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack powers all models. In its front-drive Premium configuration, the vehicle delivers an estimated range in excess of 300 miles. The AWD variants deliver more than 280 miles of range and up to 338 horsepower, enhancing dynamic driving performance as appropriate for active suburban or light off-road use.

In terms of charging capabilities, the Uncharted supports fast charging via a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, making it compatible with over 15,000 charging locations nationwide. An onboard battery pre-conditioning system helps to maintain high charging speeds even in cold ambient conditions. Subaru estimates that the battery can be charged from 10 percent to 80 percent in approximately 30 minutes when using a 150-kilowatt DC fast charger.

The exterior styling of the Uncharted adopts a fastback silhouette with a rearward-sloping roofline, which Subaru states enhances aerodynamic performance and contributes to a sporty yet refined appearance. The front fascia features a seamless design with an illuminated Subaru badge and aggressively sculpted lower cladding. Subaru notes that the Uncharted is shorter by approximately 170 millimeters compared to the Solterra, which improves maneuverability while retaining sufficient cargo volume.

Inside, Subaru describes the cabin as airy and comfortable, with distinctive orange accent trim and an instrument panel defined by sharp horizontal lines. The fastback interior layout seats five passengers across two rows. Standard technology fixtures include a 14-inch touchscreen multimedia system, dual wireless device chargers, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and available Harman Kardon premium audio. An optional panoramic glass roof with power sunshade contributes to the cabin’s open feel.

Subaru’s official materials list the standard safety and driver-assist feature suite as EyeSight Driver Assist Technologies. On all trims, DriverFocus distraction mitigation, blind-spot monitoring, and all-weather traction packages are included. On AWD trims, Subaru includes dual-function X-mode with grip control, a power passenger seat, a heated steering wheel, and water-repellent StarTex upholstery. The GT trim further adds ventilated front seats, a smart rear-view mirror, heated rear seats, and distinctive alloy wheels.

Subaru has confirmed that the Uncharted will launch in Spring 2026. Pricing and additional specifications will be announced closer to the model’s arrival. Subaru emphasizes that the Uncharted complements both the 2026 Solterra and 2026 Trailseeker in its EV portfolio, contributing to the brand’s commitment to electrification and carbon neutrality.
