Rivian’s stock is gradually climbing as the automaker has unveiled not only the “designed for the adventurous” R2 but also surprised everyone with the R3 and the performance-oriented R3X. While both the R3 and R3X are stylish and appealing vehicles with a plethora of innovative features, it is the cubic and minty fresh R2 SUV that piques our interest the most.
Drivers of the R2 will have the option to choose between configurations featuring one, two, or three electric motors. The single-motor variant will power the rear wheels, while the other two configurations will offer all-wheel-drive capability. Accommodating five passengers within its 115.6-inch wheelbase, the R2 features fold-flat rear and front seats, allowing for the transportation of large items or the conversion of the interior into a sleeping area for a couple with the addition of an inflatable mattress. The R2 boasts a dual-screen display, two glove compartments, retractable rear hatch glass, and pop-out rear quarter windows to enhance airflow.
During the live YouTube launch, Rivian CEO and Founder RJ Scaringe also announced that a range of practical accessories will be available for the R2, R3, and R3X, including roof tents and cargo/bike carriers. Scaringe also shared an Easter egg video of our friend Mylo Fowler recovering a semi-truck from a snowy ditch with his R1T to demonstrate the capabilities of Rivian vehicles.
In comparison to its SUV sibling, the R1S, the R2 is notably smaller, measuring 185.6 inches in length, 84.4 inches in width (including mirrors), and 66.9 inches in height. With a ground clearance of 9.8 inches, the R2 offers a 25-degree approach angle and a 27-degree departure angle. Each version boasts a range of over 300 miles on a single charge, and the highest-performing model can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than three seconds.
In terms of charging compatibility, the R2 will adopt the North American Charging Standard, enabling access to Tesla’s charging infrastructure, and it will qualify for the $7,500 federal EV tax credit.
The R2 can now be reserved and is slated for release in 2026 with a base price of $45,000.
