Ranulph Fiennes: How I Escaped Polar Bears, Crossed Antarctica & Cut Off My Fingers

In this week’s video of the week, we take a look at the latest episode of the LADbible TV YouTube series, Sir Ranulph Fiennes offers an intimate look into his remarkable life. He delves into his tenure with the Special Air Service (SAS) and the intense groundwork underpinning the historic Transglobe Expedition of 1982. Fiennes details the daunting adversities of his Antarctic voyage, including perilous encounters with polar bears and tales of survival that pushed human endurance to its limits. To achieve the most incredible overland expedition ever attempted, the team utilized a diverse array of transportation modes, journeying via icebreaker ship, Land Rover (of course), inflatable boat, skis, snowshoes, snowmobile, and canoe.

His narrative also touches upon the severe frostbite that necessitated the self-amputation of his fingers. His adventurous spirit led him ultimately to unprecedented achievements: traversing both the North and South Poles by surface travel and becoming the first person to cross Antarctica on foot. At 65, he surmounted Mount Everest, solidifying his legacy as the “world’s greatest living explorer,” according to the 1984 Guinness Book of World Records. Fiennes is also an author who chronicles his military and exploratory exploits as well as the lives of fellow explorers Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton.

Our favorite quote from the video is undoubtedly, “The ice floes are disobedient; they go where they want”.
