Overland Classifieds :: 2020 Man World Overland Expedition 4WD Camper

I recently shared this $675,000 SLRV Expedition Vehicle and made the irrefutable point that it was a small price to pay for “wine storage for 20 bottles.” However, I appreciate that not everyone can afford a luxurious 6WD rolling palace and that our classifieds need to be balanced with something more affordable.

Today’s budget-friendly offering is a whopping $200,000 cheaper and costs a mere $475,000 OBO. So, what exactly do you get for pocket change? Quite a lot, it turns out, including a super low-mileage (19,300 miles) Man 4×4 TGS with a bespoke camper mounted to a torsion-free subframe; five separate sleeping places, full-size tiled shower and toilet, two central seating areas, rear bedroom that doubles as an office, 43-inch TV with satellite, and much more. I’ll admit, this is still a costly  rig, but considering the specifications, you can’t beat the value. I imagine this Man truck build would be a supremely comfortable long-term family home or luxurious round-the-world overland rig.

Finally, used rigs such as this do not drastically depreciate, which means they can be enjoyed for many years, and sold for the best part of what you paid. Consequently, these monster builds can be cost-effective, especially for adventurous families, as demonstrated by Boris Malesset’s Man Kat 1 “Darth Vader.”

From the Seller:

I love this camper as it has everything required for my family and me to live comfortably in every part of the world due to its 110-240 electrical capacity, 3,000 miles of fuel range, and massive storage space inside and out. It is a go-anywhere camper, with all the comforts of home, built on a very robust Man 4×4 TGS with lockers.”

1993 Man 4×4 TGS

The Man TGS is fitted with a 322 horsepower 18-liter diesel motor, matched with a 16-speed transmission (8-speed plus half gears). As you’d expect, fuel economy sits between 8 and 10.5 mpg, but the range is considerable thanks to a massive 330-gallon fuel capacity. The truck is a capable all-terrain vehicle with off-road features that include:

  • Full-time 4WD
  • Locking axles rear and front to rear (all controlled from dash and engage pneumatically)
  • External air supply and hoses
  • Ability to wade through more than four feet of water
  • Swivel rear bumper to increase departure angle

Distinguishing Features

According to the owner, this vehicle benefits from spare parts worth in excess of $10,000. Other distinguishing features include:

  • Four 225-amp-hour batteries with 860 watts of solar
  • Dometic air conditioning and Webasto water heater with air distribution
  • Three winches
  • Motorcycle and bicycle rack, 2,400-pound capacity
  • Oven, microwave, 160-liter fridge/freezer, and washing machine
  • External generator, 6.5-kW
  • Freshwater, 630 liters
