There’s no such thing as the perfect overlanding rig—whether you go big or small, there will always be compromises. Consequently, 4WD vans are often considered the sweet spot between living in a rooftop tent and traveling in a rolling castle. Until recently, choices in this category were fairly limited, with the Mercedes Sprinter 4WD dominating the sector. However, other brands have begun to take note, and the Ford Transit AWD has become an increasingly popular choice amongst overlanders. I recommend checking out Expedition Portal’s 2020 Ford Transit AWD review for a detailed overview.

The standard Transit AWD is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 (mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission), which creates 275 horsepower and delivers 262 pound-feet of torque. Low, medium, or high roofs are available across the range, and standard features include electronic traction and stability control, air conditioning, and four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes. The Transit has a max payload of 3,670 pounds and a 5,800-pound towing capacity. Quadvan.com replaced the Transit’s stock AWD with their 4WD system, designed by John Mckee, and uses original Ford Parts to maintain the factory warranty.
