There’s no such thing as the perfect overlanding rig—whether you go big or small, there will always be compromises. Consequently, 4WD vans are often considered the sweet spot between living in a rooftop tent and traveling in a rolling castle. Until recently, choices in this category were fairly limited, with the Mercedes Sprinter 4WD dominating the sector. However, other brands have begun to take note, and the Ford Transit AWD has become an increasingly popular choice amongst overlanders. I recommend checking out Expedition Portal’s 2020 Ford Transit AWD review for a detailed overview.

The standard Transit AWD is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 (mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission), which creates 275 horsepower and delivers 262 pound-feet of torque. Low, medium, or high roofs are available across the range, and standard features include electronic traction and stability control, air conditioning, and four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes. The Transit has a max payload of 3,670 pounds and a 5,800-pound towing capacity. Quadvan.com replaced the Transit’s stock AWD with their 4WD system, designed by John Mckee, and uses original Ford Parts to maintain the factory warranty.
This Transit features a long list of optional extras from the factory, alongside a number of aftermarket modifications, which include:
- Espar heater
- Water tank, 20-gallon
- Fox rear reservoir shocks
- Toyo AT3 245/65R16 tires on Black Rhino Arsenal rims
- Baja Designs Squadron Pro ditch lights
- Fiamma F45 awning
- LiFePO 100 amp-hour batteries, Redarc DC to DC charger, 100-watt Zamp solar panel, and a Xantrex Freedom 3000 SW inverter
- Warn VR EVO winch and synthetic rope
- Two Maxx Air 6300K fans
- Dometic CRX110 fridge/freezer
