Sometimes, to possess the unicorn your heart is longing for, you must turn to the vehicle importation process. Purchasing a vehicle sight unseen and passing your judgment solely based on photographs can require a leap of faith. But, the reward can also be great. Imported vehicles have the potential to be in better condition with lower mileage and are guaranteed to be head-turning conversation starters.

A former German army ambulance, this 1990 Unimog 1300l was purchased in 2018 and imported into Canada. The owner has documented the transformation at earthx4x4.com, where you can find plenty of information about the build process.

From the Seller:

“Unlike many expedition campers, ours will not feature electronics or many gadgets. It’s back to the basics, simplicity, and a focus on real necessities.”

1990 Unimog 1300L

An incredibly capable utility vehicle, the Mercedes-Benz Unimog is used for military and agricultural purposes, as snow plows, firefighting machines, and Dakar Rally racers. Originally developed in post-war Germany, the Unimog was designed with farmers in mind, sporting equal-sized wheels so owners could drive them on the highway and achieve higher speeds than your average farm tractor.

Unimogs are also used as overland and expedition vehicles and are undoubtedly eye-catching in a rugged, this-vehicle-means-serious-business kind of way. This truck includes an OM 366A turbo engine with a sound-deadening engine blanket and soundproofing cab trim kit. No earplugs are required.
