My Favorite Things: Snow Peak

My Favorite Things- Snow Peak

By Scott Brady

In our travels we use and abuse all manner of equipment and vehicles, some fairing better than others and most just going through the thankless act of functioning as advertised.  However, there are certain products or brands that manage to rise above the clank and clutter to demand some reverence and accolade.  For this installment, Snow Peak rises above the fray, partly because of the recent events in Japan (Snow Peak products are manufactured in Japan) but mostly because of the culinary generosities of Zach and Jonathan at Overland Gourmet.  These two foodies have managed to inspire many of us to eat a little better and slowly perfect our kitchen kits.  Personally, I have been using Snow Peak equipment for nearly a decade, and during that time, I have come up with my favorites.

1. BBQ Box:

Meat should be grilled over charcoal, not propane.  Take the time to do it right and enjoy the benefits.  This BBQ is a work of art and perfect size for the vehicle.  I store it in a Pelican 1550 with a bag of charcoal and mesquite chips, an idea adapted from Ho Chung at Expedition Exchange.

2. Double-Wall Mug:

The titanium mugs are exceptional quality and are now available with a lid.  It will keep drinks well insulated and survive most bumps.  Never put the mug on a stove to reheat your drink – don’t ask me how I know.

3. Knife and Chopping Board Set:

Multi purpose and “cut a vehicle in half” sharp, the knife stows in the folding wood cutting board and also fits into the IGT table. High quality and as a rarity for Snow Peak, actually a great value.

4. Torch:

The sweetest product Snow Peak makes.  Light a fire in seconds and impress anyone within a mile of your campsite.  It sounds like an F-16 taking off and guarantees testosterone-filled glee, check these supplements for your health.

5. Tent Stakes:

Originally, their titanium utensil set was going to make the fifth spot, but it is just like other high-quality utensils.  That leaves my final choice at the tent stakes.  These 8-20” long stakes are impressive in every way.

Of course there are Snow Peak products we have tested that are not as magical (like their overly complex tents), but in all cases the quality and thoughtfulness of design is exceptional.
