We get to see a lot of camping trailers here at Expedition Portal (see here, our Off-Grid, Off-Road Trailers Buyer’s Guide), and by far our favorite camper trailers are those designed primarily for exploration (rather than pure comfort). After all, for most of us, the goal of overland travel is to get out there and get some grit under our nails and dust in our hair, not to wallow in a campsite with full hook-ups and nosy, but awfully friendly neighbors.

MDC USA Campers and Caravans has introduced the XT9 Off-Grid Extreme to the American market, expanding its Off-Grid Extreme lineup with a compact trailer designed for extended travel beyond established campgrounds. The XT9, which has previously developed a strong following in Australia, now arrives in the United States positioned as a durable, self-sufficient option for overland travelers seeking a smaller footprint without sacrificing capability.

Although compact in overall dimensions, the two-sleeper XT9 has been engineered to maximize usable living space. A 270-degree awning paired with a full annex effectively expands the sheltered footprint, covering an outdoor living and cooking area intended for longer basecamp-style stays. The camper is equipped with a combination of interior and exterior features designed to support extended travel and off-grid living.

Inside, accommodations include a custom, pillow-top, queen-size mattress made from high-density foam, measuring 80 inches long, 56 inches wide, and 6 inches thick, and a two-person dinette. Climate control and hot water are provided by a propane-operated Truma Combi system, which incorporates a 2.64-gallon water heater and a 14,300-BTU furnace for heating in cooler conditions. Cooking facilities are centered around a Thetford stainless-steel, three-burner gas cooktop with a glass lid, keeping the galley space compact and practical when not in use.

This configuration increases flexibility in changing weather conditions and allows users to separate cooking, sleeping, and storage functions more efficiently. Inside, the trailer features modern finishes, durable materials, and integrated storage solutions intended to balance practicality with comfort. A Cold Weather pack featuring water tank heating pads, Truma AquaGo, insulated water lines, a heated wet bay, a propane furnace, and dual-pane insulated windows is available to support use in lower temperatures, helping maintain interior livability when conditions deteriorate.

The XT9 is built on an MDC-designed chassis and A-frame assembly, which the company backs with a lifetime warranty. Suspension duties are handled by MDC’s X-Track, an impressive-looking independent trailing arm system, developed to improve articulation and stability across uneven terrain. The combination of independent suspension and reinforced chassis construction is designed to maintain control and durability during prolonged off-pavement travel. A rear-view camera system is also included to enhance visibility when reversing or maneuvering in tight spaces.

At the center of the XT9 Off-Grid Extreme Edition is an integrated electrical system built around Renogy components. The setup includes 400 amp-hours of lithium battery capacity, supported by 525 watts of solar charging and a 3,000-watt pure sine-wave inverter. Together, these components are designed to provide sustained power for appliances and onboard systems during extended remote stays. An automatic transfer function enables seamless switching between battery power and shore power when available. Owners can monitor system performance through Bluetooth and cloud-based interfaces, offering real-time visibility into battery status and charging inputs.

According to Founder and President of MDC Vaughan Hindley, the XT9’s design is rooted in years of field use and customer feedback in Australia’s demanding overlanding environment. He stated that the model’s appeal stems from its compact dimensions, off-road performance, and off-grid functionality, characteristics that have proven successful in diverse and remote conditions.
The launch reflects MDC USA’s broader strategy to offer a range of off-road travel trailers spanning from 9 feet to 19 feet in length. With this spectrum, the company aims to address a variety of use cases, from solo travelers and couples to families requiring greater interior space and onboard systems. The XT9 sits at the more compact end of that range, focusing on maneuverability and access in tighter terrain while maintaining key off-grid features.

The XT9 Off-Grid Extreme Edition is scheduled to make its first public appearance at the Idaho Sportsman Show at Expo Idaho in Boise on March 5. It will also be displayed at Overland Expo SoCal 2026 on March 14 at the OC Fair and Event Center in Costa Mesa, California. At both events, the XT9 will be presented alongside other models in the Off-Grid Extreme lineup, as well as the Robson XTT MKII.
Founded in Australia in 2005, MDC has grown into a manufacturer specializing in rugged travel trailers and pop-up campers designed for off-road use. The company reports that it has produced more than 40,000 units and currently offers over 30 models across Australia and the United States. The MSRP for the XT9 is $59,990.
