Mammoth Overland Unveils WLY Trailer for Extreme Winter Camping

Overlanding in winter can be almost, if not more, rewarding than overlanding in the warmer months if you are well prepared. Suitable clothing, warm boots, and a well-equipped adventure rig can take you to the adventure and keep you safe and comfortable while you are out there. Mammoth Overland has introduced its latest off-road trailer, the WLY, also known as “Wooly,” designed to offer comfort and warmth for winter campers even in extreme temperatures. Engineered specifically for cold-weather enthusiasts, the WLY can keep its interior warm down to -20°F (-28°C), making it suitable for winter activities like skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling or that cross-country winter journey you have been dreaming of all summer.

The interior of the WLY is lined with wool (get it, Wooly?), a material selected for its natural insulating properties. Wool remains effective even when damp, is fire-resistant, and hypoallergenic—qualities Mammoth Overland adapted from its parent company, Vashon Aircraft. Inside, a standard heated king-size mattress ensures sleeping comfort in frigid conditions. The trailer’s 21-gallon water tank and plumbing lines are also heated, preventing freezing down to -20°F. At the core of the WLY’s winter performance is the Truma VarioHeat 11,500-BTU/hour heater. Designed to heat spaces up to 600 square feet, the VarioHeat ensures consistent warmth even at elevations as high as 8,694 feet above sea level. Paired with high levels of insulation—R25 in the floor and R12 in the walls and ceiling—the WLY offers far superior thermal efficiency compared to the typical R0 to R5 insulation ratings found in many trailers.

President of Mammoth Overland Scott Taylor highlighted the trailer’s capabilities:

“Winters in the Pacific Northwest are beautiful and majestic, especially in the mountains. I wanted to create a trailer that allows folks the ability to explore during winter for more than just the day. With Wooly, our engineers exceeded my wildest dreams. During testing, we were able to maintain 85 degrees inside the trailer, even with the kitchen and both doors wide open, with a 27-degree outside temperature.”

The WLY also performs well in summer conditions. Its insulation helps maintain cooler interior temperatures, aided by a Dometic RTX 2000 air-conditioning unit. Power for the trailer comes from multiple sources, including shore power, vehicle towing, two 100-watt solar panels, and a WEN 4,000-watt generator. These feed an 800-amp-hour lithium battery pack from Renogy, ensuring reliable energy throughout multi-day trips.

Similar to Mammoth Overland’s HV and ELE trailers, the WLY’s kitchen remains outdoors, convenient if you plan to enjoy a campfire, and the design includes an annex that deploys over the rear hatch to provide weather protection. A 23Zero Bushman awning room adds another layer of versatility, allowing users to change out of wet or snowy gear before entering the main cabin.

The WLY’s rugged exterior includes a roof-mounted MOLLE-panel observation deck and roof rack, equipped with MaxTrax MKII recovery boards, a Krazy Beaver shovel, an ice axe, snowshoes, four ski holders, and Rotopax mounts for additional water or fuel storage. Its bronze Method Race wheels MR318 alloy rims are wrapped in Toyo Open Country A/T III tires, which are rated for severe snow conditions and ensure reliable traction. To further enhance its off-road capability, the WLY is equipped with nine recovery points—five more than Mammoth Overland’s HV model—each rated to handle up to 20,000 pounds.

The WLY is priced at $56,900 and is available for order now. Mammoth Overland plans to begin deliveries in the first quarter of 2025. As with all its trailers, Mammoth Overland builds the WLY to order, ensuring each unit meets the buyer’s needs, so choose your wooly interior well.
