La Aduana: Mercedes 300TD Wagon

I’d like to start by presenting you with an idea. In order to effectively travel around the world, you must purchase a 4WD with plenty of clearance, several modifications, and low miles. Now take that idea, crumple it up, and throw it out the window. What you need to travel the world is nothing more than a desire to explore, whatever form of transportation that suits your needs, and of course a little money. But as many people find out, that “little” bit of money can quickly turn into a whole lot of money when attempting to modify and then ship a vehicle. So what is the prospective explorer to do? We recommend finding an easily affordable vehicle with a reputation for reliability, like this 300 series Mercedes Wagon.

To be honest there isn’t much for me to say about this car except that there’s a reason you see them all over the world. (I’ll give you a hint; it’s not for their looks.) The combination of a bullet proof design, excellent fuel economy, and low cost has made them a superb choice for just crossing town or crossing Africa. Although the owner doesn’t say much about this wagon, they do state that it “runs great” with around 185,000 miles, has no dents, and includes a roof rack. Admittedly that’s not a whole lot to go on when buying a vehicle, especially one with a body style that ended long before the claimed 1993 model year. But besides the poor written description, this 300TD appears to be in fantastic shape. The paint and trim look clean and the interior seems almost new; but while that’s nice, it’s not what really matters is it. The famous 3.0 liter turbo-diesel engine under the hood is what truly makes this Mercedes great. The small 5 cylinder produces just 125 horsepower but is capable of choking down about anything that burns before puttering on without even missing a beat. With a Buy It Now price of $4,500, this diesel Mercedes costs less than the shipping on many trucks and can get you there and back with money to spare.
