Kia America Debuts Concept Vehicles at SEMA, One of Which We Really Need

Last week, I joined a hush-hush online presentation of two concept vehicles to be debuted at the 2024 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. My excitement grew as the vehicles were revealed, but that excitement turned to mild dismay when it was revealed that there were no plans for these vehicles to enter production. The EV9 ADVNTR Concept EV SUV is a good-looking vehicle, but the PV5 WKNDR Concept EV Van was the star of the presentation and a vehicle we hope Kia seriously considers bringing into production. Unveiled on the opening day of SEMA, the concepts showcase Kia’s vision of a future where vehicles combine adaptability, utility, and sustainability. Designed by Kia Design Center America (KDCA), these concept vehicles reflect a lifestyle of adventure, utility, and environmental consciousness.

The PV5 WKNDR Concept EV Van is based on Kia’s Purpose Beyond Vehicle (PBV) platform, originally intended for small business and delivery uses. The PV5 WKNDR repurposes this platform as a lifestyle vehicle, ideal for extended weekends in nature, but we can see this van being practical for much longer journeys as well. The PV5 WKNDR aims to be an all-terrain escape pod for adventurers, featuring a lifted chassis with off-road tires. Its interior is modular, designed to adapt quickly to various needs, much like a Swiss Army knife on wheels. Among its standout features is the “Gear Head” storage solution. This first-of-its-kind sheltered storage space is accessible from outside the van, maximizing the interior room while keeping essential gear within easy reach. When stationary, the “Gear Head” also transforms into a mobile pantry, ideal for cooking enthusiasts looking to prepare meals in scenic locations. The van features a swiveling “Captain’s” chair, a pop-top roof with a bed, and a host of innovative and practical features that make the most of the space and allow for comfortable van life.

The PV5 WKNDR also incorporates energy solutions that promote self-sufficiency. Solar panels and unique hydro turbine wheels can recharge the vehicle’s battery for multiple uses, from powering the interior to running an onboard air compressor. This compressor can be used to adjust tire pressure when traversing rugged trails or inflate mattresses when setting up camp, underscoring the vehicle’s focus on maximizing convenience during outdoor adventures.

The EV9 ADVNTR Concept is an all-electric, three-row SUV built to venture off the beaten path. As the most rugged EV SUV Kia has ever designed, this concept takes the 2025 EV9 to a new level of capability. The EV9 ADVNTR features custom front and rear facias, reinforced rocker panels, and a three-inch lift compared to the standard model, all aimed at enhancing its off-road prowess. Rugged tires and wheels complement the lifted stance, providing the stability needed for uneven terrain. A custom roof rack offers versatility, able to carry everything from luggage to a roof-mounted tent, further enhancing the vehicle’s role as a versatile outdoor companion.

In addition to the EV9 ADVNTR and PV5 WKNDR concepts, Kia showcased a variety of lifestyle products under the theme “Beyond Organization.” These products aim to simplify the logistics of outdoor adventures, providing a plug-and-play solution for storing and managing gear efficiently. By addressing common pain points such as organizing gear before and after trips, Kia seeks to enhance the overall outdoor experience, giving adventurers more time to enjoy the journey rather than being bogged down by preparation and setup.

For the 2024 SEMA Show, Kia America has also developed three unique versions of its most popular SUV models, each inspired by figures from Greek mythology. The concepts showcase creative customizations that combine Kia accessories with contributions from select partners.

The Sportage “THETIS,” named after the goddess of water, was developed in collaboration with Rhino Rack. Designed for river adventures, the vehicle features a custom wrap of white-water rapids, rose gold trim, and Fifteen52 wheels with Toyo tires. A Rhino-Rack kayak mount completes the package, emphasizing the vehicle’s focus on water-bound escapades.

The Telluride “ZEUS” draws inspiration from the god of the sky and thunder. It features a mountain range wrap, an Eibach lift kit, Fifteen52 wheels, and an iKamper for camping. A Yakima MOD storage system and a BORLA exhaust system give this SUV both practical and symbolic power.

The Sorento “GAIA” takes its name from the goddess of earth and features a neutral color scheme, gold accents, and black Fifteen52 wheels. Outfitted with a Yakima awning, outdoor projector, soundbar, and perimeter lighting, the GAIA Sorento aims to seamlessly integrate into natural settings.
