Hastings Overland Expands to the Southwest United States

You may recall a story we published several months back on a Canadian-based company called Hastings Overland. (You can read it here.) This small business rents fully built Jeep Wranglers equipped with everything from roof tents to kitchens, but they also do something much cooler: help you explore a new region like a local. By compiling all of the best views and destinations into a once-in-a-lifetime itinerary, Hastings gets you off the beaten path, away from the crowds of tourists, and into an adventure you’ll never forget. It’s the reason they are the youngest company to be named one of Destination Canada’s signature experiences and were a finalist for Outdoor Adventure Business of the Year at the Canadian Tourism Awards. But now we’re excited to announce that they have expanded beyond their BC office by opening a branch in Southern California.

“Southern California is blessed with endless destinations to explore, but it suffers from the same problem that BC did: tons of epic places with no self-guided adventure options that empower exploring with confidence,” Maxwell Webster, director of business development, noted.

“We started this business because there was a gap between guided and self-driven adventures. Travelers either needed a guide or had to figure it out themselves, which usually meant camping in populated places and missing the hidden gems,” says Cory Koesdibyo, Hastings Overland director of operations. “We exist to help our customers disconnect and feel confident enough to explore without a guide.”

Like their BC branch, Hastings California is renting modified Jeep Wranglers equipped with rooftop tents, tailgate kitchens, and all the necessary camping gear for an adventure. And their world-class itineraries now include the best the US Southwest has to offer. “So far, our customers departing from San Diego have mainly come from the States, but we’ve also had some from the UK and Germany. They have been focused on Anza Borrego, Joshua Tree, Big Bear, and Mojave, but have ventured as far as the Grand Canyon and Zion as well. There is still a lot more for our customers to explore, though, not including the aforementioned places, so we are just getting started!”

Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Chris didn’t receive a real taste of the outdoors until moving to Prescott, Arizona, in 2009. While working on his business degree, he learned to fly and spent his weekends exploring the Arizona desert and high country. It was there that he fell in love with backcountry travel and four-wheel drive vehicles, eventually leading him to Overland Journal and Expedition Portal. After several years of honing his skills in writing, photography, and off-road driving, Chris now works for the company full time as Expedition Portal's Senior Editor while living full-time on the road.
