Grounded Introduces the T1 Electric Trike and Trailer

A decade ago, we met an elderly couple in Patagonia traveling in a topless 1920s Model T Ford. When asked why travel in such a peculiar vehicle, their answer was a simple, “Why not?”. The ancient Model T was slow and thirsty, and, naturally, spare parts were nearly impossible to find along the route. Such a couple would consider traveling with the T1 Trike and Trailer convenient and luxurious by comparison. If you have to ask why, you should perhaps ask yourself why not.

Grounded, a Detroit-based mobility startup has unveiled the T1, an all-electric, standing-room trailer powered by an electric tricycle. This innovative combination, developed in partnership with Civilized Cycles, offers a sustainable and flexible solution for modern adventurers—with a screw loose.

The T1 is built on Civilized Cycles’ Semi-Trike platform, a light electric vehicle that combines the cargo capacity of a van with the environmental benefits of an e-bike. This platform features a patented self-adjusting air suspension system, which enhances safety, payload capacity, speed, and rider comfort.

The trailer’s interior is designed with a modern, durable aesthetic inspired by contemporary Nordic outdoor gear. It includes storage space, a lounge area that converts into a full bed, and a kitchenette. Optional features include a dry-flush toilet and an exterior shower. Both the Semi-Trike and the trailer’s living systems are fully electric, supported by a 500-watt solar capacity.

The Grounded+ app integrates the trike and trailer’s electronics, allowing users to monitor energy usage, control appliances remotely, and access real-time data on battery life, range, and water levels. This connectivity provides a comprehensive overview of the vehicle’s performance and facilitates remote living space management.

The T1 offers a range of over 150 miles and a top speed of 15 mph. It can accommodate one passenger on the trike, while the trailer can sleep two and seat two in the lounge area. A travel companion would have to have their own wheels. The overall length is 214 inches, with an interior height of 80 inches, providing ample space for occupants, compared to a rooftop tent, I suppose.

Founded in 2022 by former SpaceX engineers, Grounded aims to create vehicles that enable sustainable, self-reliant living and exploration. The team claims that the T1 represents a significant step toward achieving this mission, offering a compact and eco-friendly solution for those seeking adventure without compromising comfort.

The T1, priced at $30,000, includes the Civilized Cycles Semi-Trike platform. Customers can place a refundable deposit to reserve a unit. Production is slated to begin in Spring 2025, and pre-orders are currently open.
