Overland Journal Podcast Episode 194 - Steve Edwards

Overland Journal Podcast Episode 194

Well, look who it is. Last month, I had the great privilege to chat with Overland Journal Podcast host Scott Brady at the Overland International headquarters in Arizona in the week running up to Overland Expo West. We covered a wide range of topics, including our overland origin stories, our love for Land Rover Defenders, and the magic of traveling in Africa, and even dug into some old Volkswagen lore.

We also discussed at length the editorial mission of both Expedition Portal and Overland Journal and how you—yes, you—can be a contributor to our publications. If you are interested in sharing your words or images with our audience, read my colleague Senior Editor Ashley Giordano’s excellent primer on the perfect pitch, listen to Editor-in-Chief Tena Overacker talk with Scott about our publication process, and submit a pitch here. We are always looking for new voices and stories from around the world, and trust me, it’s a thrill to see your byline on the website or in the magazine. Don’t hesitate to reach out.

A couple of corrections to note because my copyeditor brain is always on overdrive—VW introduced the 1600cc engine in North America as an option for the Type 3 in 1966, not 1968, as I mentioned. The “upright” version of the 1600 didn’t find its way into the Beetle until 1970, so mea culpa to all my fellow air-cooled heads out there. Also, Stephen R. Brown’s wonderful biography of Roald Amundsen is titled The Last Viking: The Life of Roald Amundsen.
