Gear Scout: Rite in the Rain Journal

Memories are fleeting things, so the ability to record events as they unfold is key to keeping those moments alive. Cameras may capture the visuals, but what of the more intimate and personal aspects of travel? Those things need to be documented in other ways. Since the 1920s, Rite in the Rain has provided “outdoor writing products for outdoor writing people.”

Their comprehensive line of weatherproof notebooks, and writing tools are the perfect addition to any travel adventure. The Overland International staff relies on such products to record valuable notes, memos, and details from the field. For several months now, we have been using the Rite in the Rain Universal Outdoor Kit. This compact kit includes a waterproof notebook and equally waterproof pen enclosed in a durable Cordura cover. Not that we ever doubted the claims of the waterproof nature of the paper, we left our notebook submerged overnight in a murky puddle of water and reclaimed it the next day only to find it as good as new, ready for another journal entry. The pen, hearty enough for any adversity mother nature can throw at it, scribes effortlessly with the flow of a high quality writing instrument. The cover provides room for four pens, and dual sleeves accommodate passports, or other important travel documents. Measuring less than six by eight inches, the total kit stows neatly into pack or jacket pockets. We found this kit to be a perfect solution for capturing notes from the field, or just to jot down the events of the day.
