The Kūono modern cabin is a modest yet luxurious outpost situated just five miles from Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park in Volcano, Hawai’i. Intrigued? Well, you should be, because this property is located on the active volcano known as Kīlauea, between 3,000 and 4,000 feet above sea level.

The Kūono Cabin

The spacious, open layout of the Kūono modern cabin has room to accommodate up to four adults. The main room features 14-foot floor to ceiling windows with a large glass door that can be opened, creating a comfortable flow from the living area out onto the deck, where you’ll find a private hot tub and a firepit beyond that. Back inside the cabin, you’ll find a spacious kitchen, a workspace with a desk and chair, washer, dryer, a built-in stereo system, and all of the basic essentials for a comfortable visit like towels, soap, and linens.

Explore Hawai’i by Day

While many would be content to simply relax at Kūono, surrounded by the serenity of the local ʻōhiʻa trees, Hawai’i is a spectacular place to venture out and explore beyond your accommodations. Here are some local attractions worth visiting if you book a stay.

Volcanoes National Park – Open 24 hours a day, the nearby park has a variety of hiking trails that take you across the volcanic landscape. A short drive and one-mile hike will take you to the Keanakākoʻi Crater and yield exceptional views of the summit caldera. Mauna Ulu is a slightly longer trail, further inside the park boundary that leads you across solidified lava fields where you’ll see new ʻōhiʻa trees beginning to recolonize the barren landscape.

Hilo, Hawai’i – A short 40-minute drive from Volcano is the town of Hilo, Hawai’i. In addition to many local attractions like the ʻImiloa Astronomy Center, the Mokupāpapa Discovery Center, and the Pacific Tsunami Museum, Hilo hosts a twice-weekly farmers market, which is a great spot to do some food shopping for local produce.

Kaʻū Coffee Mill – Coffee is synonymous with Hawai’i, and the Ka’ū coffee mill is just 30 miles away from Kūono cabin. Visitors can take a tour of the facility and learn how coffee is grown, processed, and roasted.
