Crossing Continents Episode Two - Mozambique

“I love your car!”

“Do you have any cold drinks?”

The enchanting nation of Mozambique is an under-the-radar overland destination in Africa, but it shouldn’t be. Extremely affordable, blessed with some of the best beaches on the continent, and full of incredible cultures and people, it’s well worth an extended stay. In Crossing Continents Episode Two, Scott Brady and his travel partner, Joe Fleming, take us on a heartfelt tour of this incredible country.

The language barrier is often a deterrent for travelers with regards to Mozambique (the primary tongue is Portuguese), but like anywhere else in the world, a big smile and leaning into your humanity will get you through. There are good lessons to learn from Scott’s interactions with police and border officials in this video. Always friendly, never condescending, his approach is calm, cool, and collectedeven when a solicitation for a bribe may be afoot. In two years of traveling on the African continent, I never once paid a bribe, and Scott’s approach is a good model.

Most “asks” (especially from police roadblocks) are simply opportunistic, not threatening. An offer of a cold drink, especially if you sit and share it with your interlocutor, can make for a memorable experience. If you’re driving an Ineos Grenadier (perhaps the first ever to travel in Mozambique), you’ll definitely expect to draw lots of attention both from the law and from the locals. It is all part of the adventure.
