Toyota FJ-40

As someone who owns and lives in a 40-year-old overland vehicle, I’m unquestionably a fan of old-timer rigs, but I’m also not shy of pointing out their shortcomings. Fortunately, there are some outliers, which provide all the vintage charm without the constant headaches, and the FJ-40 is one of them. In fact, despite being available from 1960 to 1983, very few changes were made due to the platform’s proven reliability and workhorse credentials. Needless to say, it’s a far stretch from the reliability and refinement of modern Land Cruisers but if you’re looking for a utilitarian, field-repairable 4WD, look no further. FJ’s don’t come up for sale often, but over the years, we’ve had a few adventure-ready examples listed to our forum including this 1970 and a 1978. If you’d like a better idea of how this platform can be outfitted for travel, check out the drool-worthy builds from Legacy Overland, Overland Bound, and Arkansas Offroad. It was also Richard Hammond’s 4WD of choice for Top Gear’s legendary Bolivia Special, which is well worth watching as an overlanding enthusiast (if not for the FJ-40, then for Bolivia’s landscapes).

From the Seller:

“A 1976 FJ-40 in mostly original condition as far as the drivetrain goes, but with some improved suspension, rust abatement, and other changes. The engine is almost entirely stock, aside from an MSD ignition. It has the stock 4-speed transmission on the floor, and stock T-case. It’s not a project vehicle, and isn’t a trailer queen either—just a fun driver. There are a few boxes of parts and the manuals that come with it too.”

The FJ-40 is fitted with a 4.2-liter motor that produces 135 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque. A dependable motor is matched with impressive capability, thanks to a body-on-frame design, 4WD, high and low range, an uprated and lifted suspension, winch, and more. Inside, the Land Cruiser is decidedly utilitarian but does showcase aftermarket seats, headlights, and cup holders.
