Lexus GX470

The Lexus GX470 is one of a very select few vehicles that successfully blends rugged backcountry capability and reliability with interior luxury and refinement. When these two worlds meet, it can be problematic as the complicated electrics synonymous with luxury 4WDs do not appreciate the extreme conditions faced by overlanders. However, the GX470 proves that it’s possible, which is why it was chosen as an Overland Journal project vehicle and showcased on the Expedition Portal YouTube. Unsurprisingly, it’s a popular platform on our forum with recent examples including this 2003, 2005, and my personal favorite, a 2007 with a Campteq pop-top roof. Today’s 2006 Lexus GX470 (222,000 miles) is ready for its next adventure and showcases a plethora of premium parts and a rear-custom-drawer system. In the past, this platform was something of an underappreciated value but, more recently, has developed something of a cult-like following (with used prices creeping up steadily). In order to fully appreciate just how customizable and capable these vehicles are, check out the adventures of Logan King, Last Line of Defence, and Lexus Off-Road Adventures.

From the Seller:

I bought this Lexus in 2014 and started the overland upfit. At that time, I could only find five other GX builds in the country. This is a 220,000-mile vehicle that was used off-road, so it has some wear and tear. It is, however, built solid and has lots of life left. It has enjoyed numerous trips multiple hours away from the closest road and many miles from help (has been into the Maze section of Canyonlands multiple times). This has been a bulletproof workhorse for the past 10 years, and we’ll be sad to see it go.”

2006 Lexus GX470

The GX470 is fitted with an exceptionally long-lived 4.7-liter V8 that produces 270 horsepower, 330 pound-feet of torque, and returns a combined 15 mpg. A proven motor and drivetrain are matched with class-leading capability thanks to a body-on-frame design, full-time 4WD, front, center, and rear lockers, 4.56 gearing, skid plates, a snorkel, winch, and more. Inside, the Lexus balances these rugged credentials with a luxurious interior with driver comforts that include:

  • Heated seats
  • Cruise control
  • Backup camera
  • Air-conditioning
  • Premium 11-speaker audio
