A few months back, we featured this stunning 2022 Ford F-550 Kokopelli Expedition Truck built by Shiro Overland Camper Co., and we were flooded with interest. Based out of Boulder, Colorado, the family-run company produces a small number of bespoke overland vehicles that showcase painstaking attention to detail and unique features. Their latest rig for sale, the Betasso Overland Camper, takes a very different approach to travel than their Kokopelli build and is engineered from the ground up to be the “ultimate minimalist overland camper.” Nevertheless, even within this lean configuration, Shiro has found room to be creative with tasteful custom features, sufficient amenities, and a functional living space. With only 68,000 miles, the 2018 Ford F-150 XLT 4×4 that underpins the build is a great choice for travel thanks to a reliable EcoBoost motor, excellent all-terrain performance, well-equipped interior, and generous payload and towing capacity. Further still, today’s offering has been professionally modified for backcountry pursuits and could be taken even further with aftermarket support. It’s topped with a desirable GFC V2 XL camper, engineered by the manufacturer to “withstand extreme use and add the least amount of weight to your truck.” Despite these lightweight credentials, today’s example is by no means stark inside and has a plethora of tasteful, homey features and plenty of easy-access storage. I appreciate this build for many reasons, but first and foremost, I love that it captures the essence of overlanding and invites you to grab a friend or loved one, chuck the essentials in the back on a Friday night, and get out there for the weekend. There are no overly complicated systems or prep to worry about, which means you can focus your energy on the experiences at hand. Bravo, Shiro Overland Co.!
From the Seller:
“The idea behind this rig was to create a minimalist overland exploration vehicle. We tried to pack in everything you would need to explore for days at a time in a small and capable package. Something that wouldn’t have any problems traversing tight and overgrown forest roads but still has everything you need for adventure.”
2018 Ford F-150 XLT 4×4
The F-150 is powered by a 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine that produces 325 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque and returns 19/24 mpg (city/highway). It’s worth noting that today’s offering is optioned with a larger 36-gallon fuel tank for impressive range. A powerful yet relatively frugal motor makes for surprisingly brisk on-road performance with a sub-6-second sprint to 60 mph. However, it’s when the tarmac ends that this vehicle excels courtesy of 4WD, high and low range, a rear locking differential, Fox 2.5-inch factory Race Series coilover reservoir shocks, and more. These rugged credentials are balanced with a well-equipped interior with driver comforts that include:
- Cruise control
- Power steering, windows, locks, and mirrors
- Center console with cupholders
- Husky floor liners
- Powered and heated seats
- Air-conditioning
