Berg Offroad Redefines Overland Travel with the CX6 Travel Trailer

The CX6 off-road trailer (this class of vehicle is commonly referred to as a caravan in South Africa, where the CX6 is manufactured) would make Optimus Prime proud. With the aid of generous quantities of the best African canvas, the CX6 transforms from a compact travel trailer into a mobile home for up to six people, preferably parents and a few kids. If anything, it will take longer to deploy the large built-in awning than it will to expand the trailer into its cozy camp setup. By the time you are done and settled in, the wood in the braai will just be catching a flame in anticipation of a coil of boerewors and maybe some lamb chops (please excuse this South African nostalgia).

Berg CX6

The CX6 is built for the African bush, with an emphasis on shade, ventilation, and outdoor comfort (the full bathroom can be used without a canvas ceiling, great for both fresh air and stargazing). The interior layout consists of a rear king-size bed within a unit that slides out of the main body of the trailer and is secured and leveled by two telescoping arms. Two single beds drop outwards from the main cavity of the camper, and beneath these beds are two additional single beds that double as comfortable couches. These interior single beds are perfect for the extra kids or your boerboels (dogs). The sleeping quarters feature comfortable bedding, ample storage, and adjustable lighting, ensuring a restful night’s sleep. A full bathroom with a toilet, sink, and shower is located towards the nose of the trailer.

The CX6 offers ample living space without compromising on maneuverability or towing convenience for adventurous couples or traveling families. The spacious living area is designed to maximize comfort and functionality with comfortable seating, modern amenities, and integrated technology. The CX6 features a sleek and aerodynamic design and is reportedly crafted from high-quality materials and built to withstand the rigors of off-road exploration. It is also constructed from eco-friendly materials and engineered for minimal environmental impact.

Berg CX6

The CX6 is equipped with several standard features, including a Berg 180-degree batwing awning housed in a solid aluminum box. It also boasts a fully fitted pull-out kitchen featuring an Alpine stainless steel pot set (three, two, and one-liter), a 3-liter stainless steel kettle, a Cadac two-plate gas stove, a Smeg stainless steel kitchen basin, Victorinox shears, a peeler, and three cutting boards. It also comes with essential utensils such as a corkscrew, can opener, cheese grater, braai tools, Victorinox chef’s knife, pairing knife, steak knives, and cutlery and crockery for six people.

For comfort and convenience, the caravan includes:

  • Multi-layer hotel-quality mattresses;
  • A 14-liter gas/electric Hansen geyser;
  • A 150-liter water tank with a pump.

Other amenities include a retractable 50-foot garden hose, a clothesline, LED and reading lights, canvas duffle bags that fit under the single beds, and canvas hanger bags with ten hangers each.

Furthermore, it features a 220V (South Africa spec) 50-foot extension lead, a 1,000-watt inverter, a solar charge controller (max 500-watts), a DC to DC charging system, three 220-volt plugs, a 220-volt inlet caravan plugs, two 12-volt Hella points. Additionally, it comes with a super heavy-duty jockey wheel, a wheel spanner, a lockable spare wheel, 33-inch mud terrain tires mounted on 16-inch steel rims, mudflaps, four stabilizers, and underbody stone protectors.

Optional extras for the Berg CX6 Off-Road caravan include a variety of upgrades and additions to enhance the camping experience. These include options such as a freezer with up to 100 liters designed to fit onto the nose cone drawer or an upright fridge/freezer to replace the standard inside drawers.

Customers can also opt for additional features such as air conditioning, Berg awning side panels (available in sets of four), 3-man annex tents, or a large groundsheet for added comfort and convenience.

Other optional upgrades include:

  • Choosing between a 105 amp-hour lithium or gel battery;
  • Upgrading to a Victron 1,200-watt inverter instead of the standard 1,000-watt RCT inverter;
  • Adding a 40-liter grey water tank or a 40-liter fuel tank with pump for extended journeys.

For off-road enthusiasts, optional extras also include recovery tracks and mounts in black, a stone protector for the nose box, a tool kit for emergencies, and the option for independent suspension for improved handling and stability on rough terrain.

Berg CX6

It is anticipated that the Berg CX6 will be available in the USA in late 2024 with an MSRP in the region of $50,000. Top tip: Fly to South Africa for a safari holiday, buy the trailer there, and have it shipped back home (regulations allowing). You will probably save money, as the CX6 retails for $28,000 in South Africa.
