Airstream has introduced the new Rangeline 21PL Touring Coach, a Class B motorhome designed to offer greater flexibility for travelers seeking increased sleeping capacity, configurable storage, and simplified off-grid capability. Built on the Ram ProMaster chassis, the new model expands the company’s Rangeline lineup and reflects the continued growth of the compact adventure van segment in North America.
The Rangeline 21PL joins the recently renamed Rangeline 21PS, formerly known simply as the Rangeline when it debuted in 2022. With the introduction of a second floor plan, Airstream is broadening the appeal of its touring coach lineup by targeting travelers who require more adaptable living arrangements without significantly increasing vehicle size.

One of the defining features of the new Rangeline 21PL is its integrated power-lift bed system, which allows the interior to shift between multiple configurations depending on travel needs, whether traveling with kids or gear. Unlike many compact camper vans that rely on pop-top roofs to increase sleeping space, the 21PL maintains a fixed roof while still offering accommodation for up to four occupants.

The lift bed system can be positioned in several ways. In its upper position, it creates a bunk-style arrangement over the modular rear Smartbench seating area, allowing two additional sleeping spaces below. Lowering the bed creates a more traditional primary sleeping area with additional overhead room, while fully raising the bed opens the rear cargo and lounge area for gear storage or daytime living space.

The upper bed includes a 4-inch memory foam mattress and integrated safety netting on both sides. The design prioritizes practical usability while attempting to maintain the comfort levels expected from premium touring coaches.

Flexibility appears to be central to the overall design philosophy of the Rangeline 21PL. The rear Smartbench seating system rides on an integrated L-track floor arrangement that allows the bench to slide forward or backward depending on cargo needs. The bench can also be removed entirely to create a larger garage-like storage area suitable for carrying bicycles, kayaks, or other large outdoor equipment.

Airstream has also included additional storage features throughout the vehicle, including a pull-out drawer beneath the Smartbench and an overhead L-track system for securing cargo and organizing equipment. The adjoining side bench expands the sleeping area while also creating an L-shaped rear lounge configuration suitable for dining or general living space. A repositionable table further increases the versatility of the rear cabin layout.

The Smartbench system can also accommodate two child safety seats, signaling Airstream’s attempt to position the vehicle as a practical option for small families as well as couples or solo travelers.

The kitchen layout adopts a split galley arrangement, placing appliances and storage components across both sides of the aisle to maximize interior efficiency. A small exterior-facing table surface at the rear of the galley adds additional functionality for outdoor cooking or campsite use.

Natural light and interior standing room were also priorities in the design process. The Rangeline 21PL includes two skylights, one of which is positioned above the shower area to increase standing clearance to approximately 74.5 inches. In a compact Class B motorhome, small increases in headroom can significantly improve day-to-day comfort, particularly for taller occupants.

Airstream has additionally focused on simplifying onboard power management for off-grid travel. The integrated energy system combines a 3.5-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack, a 3,000-watt inverter, 200 watts of roof-mounted solar power, and a 2.8-kilowatt onboard generator. The generator draws fuel directly from the vehicle’s gasoline tank, eliminating the need for a separate propane system or secondary fuel source, a significant advantage in our experience.
This single-fuel approach reflects a growing trend within the RV industry toward reducing system complexity and improving ease of ownership. For travelers spending extended periods away from established campgrounds, simplified energy management can reduce maintenance demands while improving overall usability.

The Rangeline 21PL also receives upgraded suspension components intended to improve handling and ride stability under varying load conditions. According to Airstream, the rear suspension system automatically adjusts under pressure to maintain a level stance and reduce body roll, while the front suspension is designed to absorb impacts and minimize sway during changing road conditions.

The Rangeline 21PL appears to target the growing adventure van market by emphasizing configurable living space rather than simply increasing luxury features or vehicle size. While premium pricing remains a reality in the modern camper van segment, Airstream is clearly positioning the 21PL as a versatile alternative for travelers seeking a more flexible approach to van-based travel.
The Airstream Rangeline 21PL Touring Coach will be available through the company’s dealer network across the United States, with pricing starting at $173,400.
