A 1969 Yamaha 125 Enduro launched Arden Kysely into decades of off-pavement exploration, with one simple goal: to camp in the middle of nowhere. Decades of dual-sport and adventure riding followed, as did his adventure stories, motorcycle trials, and ADV accessory testing. Arden’s work was published in print and online for Rider Magazine, Expedition Portal, and Overland Journal.
Arden’s favorite haunts were Red Rock Country, the Mojave Desert, and the wide-open spaces of Nevada, although southern Utah held a special place in his heart, dating back to his days as a whitewater river guide and National Park Service employee.
Sharon, Arden’s wife and partner of 40 years, introduced him to horseback riding early in their marriage. That shared passion led to unforgettable journeys in 14 countries, including a horseback safari in Kenya.
An avid animal lover, Arden was the proud owner of many Shelties over the years, as well as cats and bunnies. In his final years, he volunteered at the local wildlife care center, taking on tasks such as feeding orphaned baby birds. Throughout his life, Arden remained a passionate advocate for the importance of wilderness, wildlife, and treating the earth with kindness.
Arden’s keen eye for detail, independent thinking, and don’t-hold-back attitude were a source of inspiration for the Overland Journal and Expedition Portal staff. Always willing to lend a hand and pitch in, Arden was generous in both actions and words. His impact on our team will be long-lasting, and he is greatly missed.
