Amidst the bustling streets of Manizales, Matthew and Stacey decide to head back towards the serenity of Colombia’s central Andean Mountains. Navigating the Colombian mountain routes is demanding but rewarding, with captivating vistas making the journey on terrible roads and jungle tracks worthwhile. They explore the Coffee Axis, Colombia’s primary coffee-producing region, visiting a coffee farm using traditional cultivation methods that naturally protect coffee plants. Their path leads to Tochecito or Finca La Carbonara, home to the world’s tallest wax palms, threatened by cattle ranching. Their ultimate goal is to camp atop Cerro Machin, a stratovolcano with increased seismic activity since 2010. Camping inside a volcano promises an unforgettable adventure, marking another remarkable chapter in their Pan American Highway journey.
