The 1978 Porsche 924 wasn’t exactly built for winter rallying; fortunately, German filmmaker and photographer David Steca has a penchant for revamping unlikely vehicles. David bought the Porsche in 2015 (“very insensibly,” he adds) to serve as a daily driver. Ninety-eight octane proved expensive, so Steca parked the Porsche after three-and-a-half years of driving it around town. “It wasn’t worth selling because it wouldn’t bring any profit,” he says, “and it would be too much money to restore given that it already drove. It [was] kind of in no man’s land. You don’t want to sell it, but you don’t need it in your life.”
Steca and his then-girlfriend (now wife), Lotte, were in Norway on a “miserable autumn northern Scandinavia kind of day” when the rally idea took root. Instagram marketing proved successful, and an ad for the Superlative Adventure Club’s 16-day Winter Baltic Sea Circle Rallye caught David’s eye. The 2020 route ran from Germany to the North Cape in the Arctic Circle via Russia and the Baltics, featured no GPS, an avoidance of motorways, and a requirement that vehicles be 15 years or older. “Lots of people did it with cars that I don’t care about,” he says. “And I was like, sure. Why not?” Lotte suggested he run the rally with the Porsche, taking her brother along.
Thus, the Porsche 924 build began. Though a few modifications are rally-specific, this machine is more akin to an overlander than a sports car. Highlights include M030 Koni sport shock absorbers, 40-millimeter custom lift spacers, a generous collection of Hella lights, a Front Runner roof rack and spare wheel mount, a custom pop-top, and a Webasto STC 2000 petrol heater installed in the spare wheel well.
