As the fourth iteration of the Jeep Wrangler, the JL Unlimited is a four-door body-on-frame construction with solid axles, a 44-degree angle of approach, and 30 inches of water-fording ability (from the factory). Having personally driven a (growing) variety of Wranglers, this editor has always been impressed with their factory capability, ease of operation, and compact dimensions that allow for easier navigating of tight trails.

“I picked up the Rubicon for the factory front and rear lockers with sway bar disconnect, the 4.10 gear ratio with 77:1 crawl ratio, the high-clearance fender flares, the factory steel bumpers, and the Dana 44 axles. But if all of that stuff, all of those Rubicon stats, weren’t enough, this Jeep has almost every factory add-on. It has the cold-weather package, auxiliary switches, adaptive cruise control, color-matched fender flares and hard-top, LED light package, 8.4-inch display, and the remote start with proximity door handles. Even though this thing is a beast off the lot, I’ve done a lot to get it ready for extended overland travel.”
2019 Jeep JLU Rubicon
This firecracker-red Jeep JLU Rubicon has a 3.6L V6 24V VVT Engine with ESS and eight-speed automatic transmission, generating 285 horsepower and 260 foot-pounds of torque. Before the addition of aftermarket equipment, fuel economy is estimated at 18 mpg city and 23 highway, with a gross vehicle weight rating of 5,800 pounds and a 1,361-pound payload. The stock wheelbase length is 118.4 inches with a 62.9-inch track width and 10.8 inches of ground clearance (before the addition of aftermarket lift, wheels, or tires).
