This video of the week follows filmmaker Sinuhe Xavier, Rashad and Ron Frazier of Camp Yoshi, and Ben O’Meara of Huckberry through Southern Utah as they curate the perfect route for Camp Yoshi—an organization making the outdoors more inclusive through trips into the remote wilderness.
Piloting the Jeep Gladiator Wayout, Xavier leads the group by paper map over remote dirt tracks, visiting ancient Pueblo ruins, and parking the vehicles to enjoy walks through sunlight-infused slot canyons and cliffside scrambles. The video marks the fourth episode of Huckberry’s 72-Hour series; previous locations included Tofino, British Columbia, Switzerland, and Jackson Hole.
Chef Rashad prepares fire-cooked steaks, pan-roasted bread, and other tasty morsels for the group. “The further you’re away from a proper kitchen, the more a good meal tastes like a miracle,” he says. Ron, his wife Shequeita and brother Rashad founded Camp Yoshi in late 2020, wanting to share the ability to unplug and experience the benefits of the great outdoors with others.
There’s an art to creating an itinerary and route that appeals to a crowd, so Xavier takes the crew to scout camp spots and rock-strewn trails suited to a three-day trip in Utah. They learn about cryptobiotic soil and the importance of its preservation. Four-hour drives on pavement are swapped for 10-hour dirt adventures featuring Utah’s splendid scenery. And once again, we are reminded that there is a lot you can see and do in a mere 72 hours, especially with a paper map and a good group of friends.
