2027 Nissan Frontier Sport Expands the Mid-Size Truck’s Off-Road Appeal

Nissan has unveiled the 2027 Frontier Sport, a new package designed to bridge the gap between the everyday-oriented SV trim and the more trail-focused Pro-X and Pro-4X models. The update gives the midsize pickup a tougher appearance and a handful of practical off-road upgrades while retaining the Frontier’s straightforward formula of naturally aspirated V6 power and traditional truck capability.

The Frontier remains one of the more underrated trucks in the midsize segment and arguably one of the strongest value propositions currently available. In recognition of the truck’s overland ability, the Nissan Frontier Pro-4X—our first choice from the Nissan range—was selected as the platform for Overland Expo’s 2026 “Ultimate Build.”

Nissan reported a 26.7 percent increase in Frontier sales during the fourth quarter of 2025, suggesting growing momentum for the platform, although the company still trails far behind its primary rival, the Toyota Tacoma, which sold close to 274,000 units over the same period. The Tacoma continues to dominate the segment through brand loyalty, a wide range of trims, and advanced technology offerings, but the Frontier counters with simplicity and value. Unlike Toyota’s move toward turbocharged four-cylinder and hybrid drivetrains, the Frontier retains a standard 310-horsepower V6 engine and a conventional 9-speed automatic transmission. The Nissan also offers competitive towing capability, with up to 7,150 pounds, while typically undercutting the Tacoma on price.

Marco Fioravanti, vice president, product planning, Nissan US and Canada, said,

“Nissan built its reputation on ruggedly capable trucks that help our drivers get more done during the workday and experience more adventure at the weekend. We’re expanding those possibilities with the new 2027 Frontier Sport Edition. The Frontier Sport Edition delivers a more athletic appearance that answers our customers’ calls for a stylish, distinctive truck backed by capability that supports their active, outdoor lifestyles.”

The 2027 Nissan Frontier Sport Edition arrives at a time when competition in the midsize truck segment continues to intensify, with rivals such as the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, and Chevrolet Colorado offering increasingly specialized trims aimed at recreational off-road buyers. Rather than introducing an entirely new model, Nissan has opted to create a package that borrows visual and functional elements from the Frontier’s more capable off-road variants while keeping pricing and complexity below the Pro-4X.

Based on the Frontier SV Crew Cab, the Sport Edition receives several exterior upgrades intended to give the truck a more aggressive appearance. These include a blacked-out grille, mirrors, and lower front fascia, along with unique “Sport” graphics on the bedside and tailgate. The package also adds black 17-inch wheels wrapped in 32-inch Hankook Dynapro all-terrain tires, aluminum skid plates, LED fog lights, and front accent lighting.

Mechanically, the Frontier remains unchanged for 2027. The truck continues to use Nissan’s 3.8-liter naturally aspirated V6 engine paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive comes standard on the Sport Edition, while four-wheel drive remains optional. Nissan has not positioned the package as a direct replacement for the Pro-4X, which still offers Bilstein shocks, locking rear differential hardware, and more advanced trail-oriented systems. Instead, the Sport appears intended for buyers who spend most of their time on pavement but occasionally venture onto gravel roads, forest trails, or mild overland routes.

Inside, Nissan has attempted to differentiate the Sport Edition with yellow accent stitching and trim throughout the cabin. Yellow highlights appear on the dashboard, center console, seats, and door panels, creating a noticeably more youthful and outdoors-oriented aesthetic than the standard SV. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto continue through the Frontier’s 12.3-inch infotainment display, while a seven-inch digital instrument cluster remains standard.

Additional updates across the 2027 Frontier lineup are relatively modest following the truck’s mid-cycle refresh for the 2025 model year. A new paint color called Alpine Metallic joins the range, while Pro-X and Pro-4X models receive an upgraded Qi2 wireless charging pad as part of the Pro Convenience Package. Nissan has also separated the moonroof into its own standalone option package for certain trims.

The Frontier occupies an unusual position within Nissan’s global truck portfolio. Unlike the international Nissan Navara sold in many overseas markets, the North American Frontier has evolved into its own dedicated platform tailored specifically for US and Canadian buyers. Since the launch of the current-generation D41 Frontier for the 2022 model year, Nissan has steadily refined the truck rather than radically reinventing it.

That steady evolution appears deliberate. Nissan has increasingly leaned into heritage-inspired and enthusiast-oriented variants such as the Hardbody Edition and now the Sport Edition, likely recognizing that many buyers in the segment are seeking trucks that balance everyday usability with lifestyle-oriented design cues. The Frontier’s comparatively simple engineering, naturally aspirated drivetrain, and traditional body-on-frame construction continue to appeal to buyers wary of excessive complexity in newer trucks.

Pricing for the 2027 Nissan Frontier Sport has not yet been announced, though Nissan says full pricing details for the updated lineup will be released closer to the truck’s arrival in dealerships later this summer.
