BAE Systems Titan

Expedition trucks enable travelers to see the world without sacrificing home comforts. If you’d like to deep dive into the merits of these monster rigs then listen to Principles of Overlanding :: Expedition Campers on the Overland Journal Podcast. These vehicles are the perfect option for long-term trips or as permanent live-in homes and are outfitted accordingly. Today’s 2012 BAE Systems Titan XD 4400 is one of the most impressive expedition builds we’ve showcased and is topped with a premium Bliss Mobil 15-foot Standard. The base truck is a BAE Systems’ civilian version of the legendary LMTV, which is the “highest proven reliability of any tactical vehicle.” The Titan truck is engineered from the ground up to perform effortlessly on primary and secondary roads as well as trails and cross-country.

Furthermore, it will operate efficiently in temperatures ranging from -50-fahrenheit to +120-fahrenheit, which combined with its extreme capability make it an ideal candidate for hardcore off-grid international trips. Today’s Titan is outfitted with one of Bliss Mobil’s “truck-independent” habitation boxes that are designed to be seamlessly transferred should the owner wish to switch out their existing platform for something else. This is a practical approach that not only allows for planned swaps but also ensures that if you find yourselves stranded with a mechanical catastrophe there’s a possibility to transfer your home onto another suitable truck and continue the journey. In addition, in Europe, their boxes are widely considered the benchmark by which all others are measured and showcase extraordinary attention to detail. It’s important to note that the seller is willing to separate the truck and box with the latter offered independently at $415,000.

From the Seller:

Trying to find a balance between off-road capability and the creature comforts from home was tricky. Some options nailed the home-like amenities but sacrificed the ability to go farther or handle more difficult terrain (e.g. long-range power/water or breakover angle). And other options had excellent off-road capability but were not able to provide the size for two people and dogs or the features we wanted like a shower or expanded storage for gear. ‘Rhonda’ strikes that balance very well and can travel further afield than many options are capable of, navigating terrain my straight-axle 80 series salivates over while allowing us to spoil ourselves a bit on the road.”

The Titan is fitted with a 6.7-liter Cummins motor that delivers 325 horsepower and an impressive 860 pound-feet of torque. This is mated to an Allison 3700sp 7-speed transmission and fast axles which ensures a comfortable cruising speed on the highway. However, it’s when the tarmac ends that this platform really comes to life courtesy of full-time AWD, electronic central tire inflation system, locking rear differential, Michelin XML all-terrain tires, parabolic leaf spring suspension with hydraulic shock absorbers, high and low range, and more. Inside the Titan is intentionally utilitarian but does feature basic comforts and some aftermarket upgrades that include Scheelman seats, air conditioning, center console with cupholders, and more.
