Toyota Land Cruiser

The 100 Series Land Cruiser is a legendary travel companion and a favorite with our community, with recent adventure-equipped examples including this 1998 with a custom overland trailer, 1999, and 2006. With many new 4WDs retailing for more than $50,000, it makes sense to instead invest in a well-maintained pre-owned vehicle for a fraction of the cost and use the money saved for travel and experiences. Despite being a pinnacle overland platform, today’s tastefully uprated “rust-free” 1999 Toyota Land Cruiser (196,000 miles) is advertised at just $18,500. At the end of 2023, I bought a similar budget-friendly 90s Japanese 4WD, and it made me realize that I’ve spent way too much time and money trying to build my dream overland rig (a 1986 Vanagon Syncro) at the deficit of travel. At some point, the build becomes an excuse for not leaving when, in reality, you can buy today’s Land Cruiser, throw a sleeping bag and supplies in the back, and hit the road. The beauty of the 100 Series is that from the factory, it was engineered to conquer the toughest terrains and climates, so it requires little to no modifications to drive around the world. From the Seller:

All fluids changed, and the radiator, thermostat, water pump, bearings, ball joints, and pulleys were all replaced within the last 5,000 miles. Fluid film applied every year. Duratracs have minimal wear. I’m sure there are things I’ve missed. Feel free to ask any questions about this vehicle. No issues.”
