1998 Toyota Hiace 4WD :: Classifieds

Toyota Hiace 4WD

I’m fortunate to see new overlanding builds every single day ranging from budget 4WDs to million-pound expedition trucks. However, occasionally a vehicle is listed that I want for myself and today’s Toyota is one of them. The Hiace is perhaps not the first option that comes to mind when we think about overlanding but it is a legitimate platform. In fact, this commercial icon is found globally in some of the toughest environments and is considered by many, including myself, as one of the best vans ever made. It’s remarkable to me that many Sprinter AWDs are selling for over $100,000 when in my humble opinion, the affordable Hiace is a better choice for travel and is a fraction of the price. Cue today’s low-mileage 1998 Toyota Hiace 4WD (27,400 miles), which has recently been imported to the US and would make the perfect blank canvas for a full overland build-out. In stock form, this van is already capable, but with aftermarket upgrades, it’s genuinely impressive. If you’d like a better idea of how the Hiace handles the rough stuff, enjoy the backcountry adventures of Vanlife Northwest and Miskako on YouTube. Considering a trip around the world? An exceptionally long-lived motor and drivetrain are matched with impressive capability thanks to full-time 4WD and lifted suspension.
