Here in Europe custom expedition vehicles are commonplace and can be a relatively cost-effective solution for overlanders considering long-term trips or living on the road full time. I have to admit that initially I had reservations about these big trucks and dismissed them as way too uneconomical and impractical. However, over the years I’ve had the pleasure of meeting the owners of these rigs and my perspective has shifted. Firstly, they’re not necessarily as expensive to run as you may think. A friend of mine has a Man expedition truck, which returns 15 mpg and has a range of close to 1,500 miles thanks to its huge fuel tank. The upshot of such an impressive range is that you can fill the tank/tanks in a location with cheap fuel and strategically plan to stop at another affordable fill point. The same friend explained that the ability to always choose the cheapest stops meant that over a year of travel, the truck was costing him the same amount to run per mile as his family wagon. Further still, the sheer size of these rigs means you have the payload and space to fit enough solar, batteries, and water to be completely self-sufficient, which means that paying for campsites is voluntary rather than mandatory. These vehicles are cheap houses rather than expensive vehicles and allow many working professionals the ability to save a lot of money on the road. Today’s 1992 Mercedes-Benz 1120AF 4×4 has covered just 57,7xx kilometers and is the perfect base for a full overland build-out.
From the Seller
“I have taken this truck on many long journeys and it did not miss a beat. Surprisingly easy to drive, a mix between an old G-Wagon and an RV. Will fit in a traditional parking spot surprisingly. The chassis is in great shape with no rust besides minor surface rust here and there. Locking diffs engage and this model has full time 4WD. This Mercedes-Benz 1120AF 4×4 was formerly used as a fire truck in Cornwall, England. Being a fire truck, it has been well maintained and kept in nice condition through the years. Offering many of the sought after options such as the double cab, more powerful engine, locking diffs, high speed ratio, and a 6 speed manual transmission.”
