RichardT's 95 Montero SR Build Thread

Alright, I decided to finally start a build thread, although I have done some things to my Monty already, I undertook the lengthiest mod I've done so far, and figured now was as good a time as any. I'll add my pics and info from other things I've done up until now, but after I get this started.

For now I'm gonna start with the paint job I did this past Saturday.

I've been meaning to paint the rocker panel portion of my truck since I bought it. I wasn't a big fan of the black over tan color combo, and wanted to have the truck be just all black.
Paint1.jpg

It all started with a good wash the day before, and then I went to Pepboys, and picked up 3 cans of Armour spray on bed liner., I also took a quick trip to Home Depot, because after I got home, I couldn't find any of my sandpaper (we moved a few months ago). I picked up some 100 grit, and some 150 grit paper. The can asked for 150 grit, but I would've been better off just using the 100, I ended up going over the passenger side with both, and realized it was overkill, and so on the drivers side I hit it with just the 100 grit.

Paint2.jpg

I then carefully masked off anything I didn't want painted including the chrome portion of my rear bumper, as well as the corners of the front bumper, which I'll explain why later.

Paint3.jpg

As I got finished sanding the drivers side, and was about ready to paint, it started getting dark, but I kept at it. Note to anyone who wants to do this in the future, this stuff sprays on THICK, and it can be quite a challenge to avoid any runs in the paint, so be prepared to do multiple light coats, do not try to cover the whole area on your first coat, it'll look sparse because of the way it sprays, but it's better, just do a bunch of light coats, and it'll turn out ok. My passenger side had a few more runs in it, as I did that side first, and by the time I did the drivers side, I had it pretty down pat. But, if you do get runs, because this stuff has a textured finish anyways, just dab at it with a paper towel, and you can get rid of most of them.

Paint4.jpg

It got too late to take proper photos, and I also needed one more coat, so I took these the next day.
Paint5.jpg

I also painted inside the door jambs, as I didn't want anyone to open the door and wonder why they were tan ;), but these I did in a flat black, which I then covered with a matte clear coat for some protection ;)

Paint7.jpg

I also painted inside the wheel well portion, and under the sides, just in case someone happened to get a look under there, I wanted a finished look, but I didn't take a picture of that, sorry ;)

I didn't do the front bumper as you can see in this photo below, because on the March 10th, the Monty is going to spend a few days at a local overland shop called American Overland Expedition, where they're gonna custom fab me a new winch bumper :victory: I can't wait. I'll try and stop in on them during the build process to take some pics in progress, but I don't know if I'll be able to.

Looks good man, I went through a can or two more than you though. I have never been accused of being a great painter... Plus I think my stuff is inferior to yours and therefore needed more. Since I used the walmart stuff, I have gone to using so great bed coating from tractor supply.

Thanks, I appreciate it, I'm glad I did it, I've had nothing but compliments on it (seems a lot of people prefer the full black rather than the two tone) even with the few runs I had, they're hard to notice with the texture.

I almost went with the cheaper stuff cause thats all I could find, but all of it was too smooth, so I kept looking and finally remembered that someone here on the forums had bought their stuff from Pep Boys, so I went and found this stuff, and I'm glad I did, it had a much rougher texture.

Later this year over my summer break I'm gonna paint the rest of the truck matte black to complete it, a bunch of my clear coat is already missing, so it can use some fresh paint. Besides I think it'll hold up better offroad.

And don't shortchange yourself, your truck looks great :)

Richard,

That looks very nice. I've been considering refreshing my paint as well but on the roof & hood.

Out of curiosity is the paint you used UV resistant? When I did my rock skids using POR15, I learned the hard way it wasn't UV resistant and within a few months, it gained a hazy appearance instead of being black. If not you may want to cover it with a UV resistant paint.

Like I said though, it looks very nice.

Thanks for that advice Ray, seeing that it was bedliner, I didn't even think about that. When I get home from work today I'm gonna check the can and see, if it isn't I'll try to find a matte clear coat that I can use to protect it.

Thanks again!

Looks awesome Richard! Looking forward to seeing your bumper too.

Thanks man, and I can't wait for the bumper either, she goes in tomorrow for surgery.....

And Off-Roader, I checked, and the Dupli Color Bed Armor I used is protected against UV, so I'm golden :)

Hey guys, just stopped by the shop today to see if any progress had been made yet on the bumper, they have started the fab process and have some pieces made, but I didn't get any photos of that, but I got a couple of the Monty sans bumper

I passed by the shop this morning to get an update, and they had some more work done, they said that the whole thing should be done in a day or two, so I'm hoping by tomorrow night, Thursday the latest.

I snapped a couple of shots

He said he was going to cut the rest of the pieces today, and mount up the winch, so we'll see how it all goes :)

They are going to use more and better bolts to attach it to the frame right? Not sure if that set-up will work if you plan on winching very much.

In the photo's it's a little deceiving and looks as if there are only 2 bolts attaching those plates to the frame rails, but in reality, there are 5. Two going in from each side, and one going up from the bottom.

So hopefully that will be enough, do you think? It's my first winch bumper, so I'm not too experienced with it all

Although now that you bring it up about "better" bolts, it did look like they were using the stock bolts there, but, I'm thinking it was more for use as the mock up, hopefully they'll use some grade 8 bolts, I'll bring it up with the guy for sure, thanks for noticing.

I'm a man of the people...... :)

Yeah, I'd have him use grade 8 if it were me. 5 on each side should be okay.
