$16 in wheel paint from pepboys, 2 3m sanding pads (fine and medium) a good wash, some elbow grease, a Sunday afternoon and I got this! Not bad for rattle can!

Nicely done. Did the same with my wheels and pretty happy with it. I used black Duplicolor Wheel Paint, which is suppose to bond stronger and resist chemicals and brake dust.
So far it's holding up pretty well. A couple of small rock chips required a touch up, but easy to do. I overlapped index cards pinched between the wheel and the tire to protect from overspray.
The center caps will need a serious sanding to get through to the chrome coating. I found it to be a bit more work than wheels and spent an afternoon sanding them. The beers didn't make me more efficient with time either, but it's all part of the fun.

Sounds like the same stuff I used. I was surprised at how well it went on. I actually did not even mask the tires off. I free handed this. ( I useed to race R/C and have painted A LOT of bodies with spray cans) Just did the insides first to get a feel of the spray pattern coverage. As fot the center caps, I'll just take them to the shop and use the bead blaster to texture the surface enough for the paint to stick. I also have some plastic prep stuff, bulldog i think its called. Just wipe it down with that and the paint will hold well.

My back is tired today tho. Those wheels are heavy. The guys that put the tires on really torqued the hell out of the lug nuts. I'm 6"5 240lbs and pretty strong. There were two nuts that took almost all i had to get them to budge. I have an Ingersoll rand air air gun and they wouldn't budge. My air compressor couldn't get enough psi. Needed a cold one after that.:sombrero:

Nothing that a 3' cheater bar on a 1/2" drive & sufficient weight on the end wouldn't fix.:Wow1:

BTW, I'd stop taking them to that tire shop or at least complain about it to the shop manager. The bolts are supposed to be torqued properly (can't recall the spec right now though) and not simply gorilla tightened..

Lookin good. I was thinking about painting mine black too but I wasn't sure how it would look with the wheel design. Do the chrome centers look terrible on the black wheel or are you just going for an all black look?

I didn't even try the chrome on the black. Yesterday I bead blasted them, today I painted them black and have installed them. I kind of liked the look w/o the center caps. I'll post a pic tomorrow. I am going to paint the diamonds red and I got some cool little ralliart decals. I am going to put one an a spoke of each wheel.

Also picked up my rear spoiler from the paint shop. Have it on by sunday.:victory:

What kind of paint is best for chrome? I'm sure it would peel off, but what would stick the best until it could be painted again?

I used a bead blaster to make the surface a satin texture so the paint would adhear to it. I didn't get any pics of that. Looked like a matte titanium finish. Kind liked it, but ended up painting them anyway.

bead blaster? is that a paint? I have a chrome bull bar I'd rather have it black. There is a shop in town that paints wheels but wanted almost what a wheel would cost!

Beadblaster aka sandblaster. My dads shop uses glass beads instead of "sand"

The paint I used was duplicolor satin black wheel paint. It said "wheel paint" and is specific for wheels, supposed to resist heat, brake dust and chemicals. I'll let you know how it holds up.

As for the chrome caps, aster the bead blasting they were a very dull gray. Paint went on very well. It drys fast too.

I will go snap some pics... brb:costumed-smiley-007

here ya go.
