Has anyone built an Expedition rig from a M101A1/A2

I am actually building a hard sided camp trailer off of the flatbed version of the M101. I have an M-116. It has an 8 lug axle with surge brakes.

I havent towed it a whole lot, but Im impressed with its light weight (650lbs) and general stability overall. my tow rig is a 4.0 XJ cherokee. its not a power house, but I can hardly tell its behind me.

Im hoping to about 1500lbs +/- by the time its built, which still shouldnt bother the jeep.

My build might be in a little different direction then you guys, because I am looking to build a full on travel trailer that can stand the stresses of some hairy logging roads. This includes a cook top, a LP fridge, fresh water tank, bed, etc. All inside a 6x8 box.

It will be used primarily in the winter time for base camp. In the summer we tent camp.

I'll have to post up some drawings of my plans.

Related note... is there an adapter to plug the nato pigtail into a factory 4 or 7 pin on a truck...

Seems like we have somewhat similar ideas. Check out my thread:

not that I have found, but I just unplugged the entire pigtail from the trailer and rewired up a new 7 flat plug. pretty simple really, no different than a standard trailers wiring. just replace your bulbs with 12 volt bulbs, or your lights will be pretty dim.

Rewiring is no issue... I worked for U-Haul for a while so I got to do it on a daily basis... but I figured the last thing I want to do is rewire my "new" trailer at the depot prior to my 6 hour trip home...

honestly the best solution is probably the magnetic lights...

That is a cool link, roughly the same size as mine, and about the same layout. he loses alot of room in his, where we would be using the entire floor of the trailer.

Actually there s a guy on eBay that'll make one to convert from the military plug to eitherca 7 or 4 plug variant. I think the 7 is the only one shown but I emailed him and he said he'd make it a 4.

I was going to buy it but decided to wing it on my own today and finally figured it out after chasing a ground issue for a couple of hours.
