~My name is Stefen Schmidt, born and raised in Tucson, Arizona. In January of 2011 I bought my first truck, a 2008 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road PreRunner. From that moment on, I can honestly say my life changed forever! We begin first with the theme of my build. I named my truck RINZLER, after the character in the movie, TRON:Legacy. Rinzler is sort of a ************ throughout the entire movie with his black and orange theme, making it an easy decision to adopt the same designs into my truck.

~As an Offroad & Outdoor Enthusiast, I know there will always be something to add to make RINZLER better equipped for the road ahead, and to help continue on my adventures. A 4x4 conversion could be a very real upgrade in the very far future, but for now I get to the places I wanna go, and a PreRunner with a rear locker suits my needs. Expedition Portal is another awesome forum that I believe will help walk me through some very handy and useful modifications. In the mean time, I'll be browsing

This is actually really funny, I was reading through your TW build thread just yesterday! Looks great man, I'm still a good few months away from buying my Tacoma but your truck is going to make it hard to stay stock for long.

Indeed it does! It's far from stock tho, someday it will have a true 4x4 conversion with FJ style shifter to bypass all that electronic bs

KMF PreRunner Style Tiregate

The title says it all! My buddy Andrew runs his own little fab shop out of his garage called Keepers Metal Fabrication (KMF). After looking at the PreRunner style Tiregates on tiregate.com, we realized how poorly designed they are, using the fiberglass bed as the only support. This leads to cracked beds and tons of warping, putting my fiberglass bedsides at greater risk. After I had Andrew build my hybrid sliders and bedrack, I knew he was more than capable of helping create the newest addition to Rinzler. With the RTT on the bedrack, a 35" spare not able to mount in the stock location, and a 5 and a half foot bed used for the rest of the camping gear, a tiregate was the obvious solution. With some intuitive design, the square tubing uprights have been mocked up. All of the metal used for the mock up was scrap laying around in his garage

The uprights are welded to some metal plates that are bolted in using 2 of the factory bed bolts and 2 more will be added to bolt through the bumper itself. The whole gate will be removable and I'll still be able to reinstall the tailgate if need be! The next build day, most of the gate itself will be finished and I'll show you guys the heim joints the gate will use to swing open from either side

KMF Tiregate Continued

Got alittle more done today before Andrew got called into work. Build is moving right along, but since I'm the guinea pig once again for KMF , we're taking things slowly

Ballistic Fabrication 5/8" Heim Joints


So we used a few more than just 2 bolts....This gate isn't going anywhere using the 2 factory bed bolts and 5 5/8" bolts!


Here's a shot of the 1.5"x.250 DOM which will be used for the entire gate!
