However the BFGs KM2s are pretty good on the road. They won't be michelin quiet, but they will be tame and work well.

Agreed. As an all around tire KM2's are hard to beat. I am at 33k miles on my current set and still have plenty of tread. They do get a bit noisy as they wear, but like all of this type, they benefit from frequent rotation. Solid off road performer, solid on road also. It looks like my next set of tires is going to be a different brand but that will (should) be the result of a trade for tractor parts. Otherwise I'll be right back on KM2's.

I have a set of 6/ea 8.25 XZLs- 4 have <4k miles, and 2 are new (looked for 20 years before finding a decently priced set), on Wolfs. You likely will never use the spare, and the real specialty of these tires is their puncture resistance and longevity (when did you ever see a XZL with weather checking??). That is part of their design criteria for military applications as they sit for ever, then potentially are called into duty. And you can easily run single digit air pressure without popping a bead...

Not trying to sell you on the tire, but I have a set if you are interested- going to 9.00/16 for the 130 breakover angle. And I can ship relatively inexpensively if you can pick them up at a Forward Air terminal- they will be on a pallet, and will be loaded with a forklift for you- or you can remove the pallet and load them yourself. PM if interested.

There! Problem solved!

Guys who wheel their trucks here in the southeast don't like the toyos. That said, we have mud-covered rocks. I think the toyos are going to be better on road. However the BFGs KM2s are pretty good on the road. They won't be michelin quiet, but they will be tame and work well.

All that said, the standard 7.50x16 size works great. Its what I typically run on my 109. Except for getting into the super rough stuff, I prefer them as my 109 rolls very well on the highway with them.

If you want 34", then get TSLs. They will be miserable on road but oh my goodness SSSSSSOOOOOOOO good off road.

Which engine do you have in your 109? Both of the 110s I got have the diesel turbo ('87/'88 19J) and so far the only driving I've had the pleasure of doing in them was on the wrong side of paved roads while scrambling to get them to the port last month. They're very different than my NAS D90 was for obvious reasons and not obvious ones - it was on 37" MT/Rs with coil overs and all kinds of other mods for rockcrawling.

The reason i ask is because I don't think they'd be underpowered with a 33 or 34 inch tire but i don't have enough experience to say for sure. I bought the parts to build a 300 Tdi and put them in the back of one of the trucks but I'll need to build it. Either way I get the feeling it would be a good idea to see what I can do on the stock 7.50x16s before ordering a lift and new shoes. I guess I got kind of used to driving over anything I wanted to and am reluctant to give that completely up even though this will be an expedition style rig.

By the way, love your signature. I picked up a stock locked '93 fzj80 to cruise around in while I'm waiting on my Rovers. Had to put a new head gasket in (not too fun), but got it cheap. Would probably keep it if I could handle not shifting. Might keep it anyway.

I've got a tricked out 2.25 gasser 4 cylinder in it. Its actually pretty good on power and if I can get the shake out of rear end, I should be able to bump up my speed from 60mph to 70. I know that doesn't sound like a lot, but being able to cover an extra 40 miles during a 4 hour trip would be quite nice. Also I never go above 3000 ft ASL. So the normally aspirated gas engine works just fine.

Coupled with the 235/85/16 tires, I have no issues with how the truck drives on the highway. I installed a Suffix B transfer case so my low range is amazing. I typically cruise around off road in 2nd, sometimes 3rd, and really only use 1st gear when its about to get real.

All that said, my high range is 1.15 in my transfer case and my diffs are 4.7. If you've got a 1.6 or a 1.4, the bigger tire size is going to make a huge difference in how easier it is to drive.

The Turbo Diesel should be good for the higher altitudes you are working in. Yeah just drive it and see what you like. You are fortunate to have a pair of 110s and a FJ80! All I have is a clamped out 109 that is sitting in my garage with crap for brakes.

Sorry I've been gone for a week! I'm really looking forward to this new chapter in my Land Rover life and life in general. My sister lives in Florida so I'm hoping that over the next few years I'll be able to cruise through and see some of the people I'm meeting on this forum while traveling with the wife and new daughter (any minute now). I ended up getting the set of 8.25x16s that Rovertrader had (thanks again!) and will pick them up on my way to or back from Los Angeles next week while I'm out getting my 110s. I'll definitely be selling one of the 110s and might even decide to sell the cruiser in favor of somethhing with a manual tranny, so if anyone is interested keep an eye out!
So far I'm really happy with how my decision to move out of the rock crawling scene and get into overland is already turning out. I know it will be more fun with the family and can already tell that the people are great!
And I had a couple of people asking, so here's a picture of my old D-90. I was sad to part with it but am confident that the end result will definitely be worth it!
Before anyone asks, the CT stickers were on it because I just liked the stickers. It was a 1995 NAS and a very good vehicle. Despite the extreme tires and off road stuff it still worked well on the street and I never had to deal with it eating parts of any kind. Except for that time I tried to pull a stump out for my neighbor and had the lockers on in reverse. But that was just me being a moron. :)

I remember that D90. Always liked that truck and it was completely baller. I know what you mean about getting out of the "rock crawler" scene. Used to be all about putting my 109 into situations it shouldn't have been in. Now I do more reasonable trails and overall, I have more fun. My 35" TSLs I've got typically stay in storage for extended periods of time. Haven't broken them out this year and don't foresee me needing to break them out.

Enjoy the 110!
