Beating the stealership!!!

My rig "gen 3" didn't come with a spare key or key fob. I called my dealer to try and have some made up. This is what they said. "The fob is gonna run 187.00 plus tax and a $75 programming fee, as for the key...we don't have a key machine we just have a locksmith come around every so often, I can call you and if you can get here when he's already here I can get you one made for $50"

Whaaat! So the fob will be $262 plus $50 for a key...if I can make it there when the locksmith is already there....No thanks!!!

So here is your solution.

For the spare key. Locate an auto locksmith in your area. Cost me $70. Which was $20 more to cut out the middle man "stealership" but I got it cut and programed the same day I called the dealer.

As for programming the fob: it was the easiest i've done and took about 2 minutes. Here's a video for an 04 Evo but its exactly the same as the gen 3 monteros.

remote fob programing for mitsubishi evo: http://youtu.be/x4K9NOPujkE

Also heres the link to the instructions on programming the fob.

I ended up saving around $180 bucks outsourcing and doing it myself.

Heres my new key and fob with the original.

Not bad, I was considering swapping my fob or my battery at least, my car's alarm randomly goes off at night and I was wondering if it was my fob acting up. (btw I hate the panic button on the fob :p )

I would try the battery first, im not sure if that would work but at least its the cheapest. I hate the panic button as well. I cant tell you how many times my kids have hit that sucka with out me or my wife seeing them, as the lights flash and horn blares you can here the chuckle of little chillins behind it lol.

The uphill battle begins
My daughter tried that route with ours. She was at cheerleader and her keys got locked up in a teachers room. Teach said she could leave her purse there as she was grading papers late.... anyway. She got stuck with no keys. She had lost the spare set. The dealership had no keys in stock and told us to call their locksmith. We did. He came and cut a key from the vin and presto she was in. Then he programed the key to work. She paid him his 130 fee. To which he handed her her reciept and said btw... when you do get those other keys they won't work the truck anymore. I reprogrammed your truck, not the key. ******!!! So we have 2 sets of factory keys that are useless. Punk guy. My daughter was 16 and had no idea. But to wait till after to tell her. I need to go to mitsu and give the service dept a piece of my mind.

Some people look for those opportunities to screw over a teenager and make a quick buck, it's a bunch of b.s. when it happens. Especially in your daughters situation when the job had already been done when he decided to name his price, not to mention the guy is the only one who could do it, and she needed it to be done then.

Yup, well done. I accidentally sent my key & fob through the hospital laundry with my scrubs and that was that. Bought a new fob online, programmed in two minutes. I bought a blank Mitsu chipped key online and had a local lock shop cut and program it for cheap.

Is it your alarm horn honking that goes of or just your horn single blast? I only ask because our Monteros have problems when older with the membrane in the horn button becomes weak and when temperatures change or barometric pressure change can cause the horn to go off in middle of the night. It's happened to mine. So I made a horn bypass switch.
