Expedition Rigs Encountered

I'll post shots of any rigs we see while we're out and about.

Here's the first batch.

Date: 27 June, 2007
Location: Bryce Canyon National Park Campground
Chassis: Mercedes 1017
Rig Info: ex-German military chassis, custom built by small shop
Owners: great couple from Germany that we've kept in touch with
Circumstances: This was during our six month test trip or our rig in the U.S. We were riding through the campground on our dirt bikes on a scouting trip and struck up a conversation.






Date: 28 November, 2007
Location: Carlsbad, CA, Dove Library parking lot
Chassis: MAN
Rig Info: N/A
Owners: couple from Germany touring North America and beyond
Circumstances: Steph spotted this in the library parking lot down the street from our old house in Carlsbad. The wife of the couple walked out of the library while Steph was shooting these photos.

Date: 6 January, 2008
Location: Pueblito Los Dominicos, Las Condes, Santiago, Chile
Chassis: Mercedes 1832 (2WD)
Rig info: N/A
Circumstances: We were visiting the market and spotted this in the parking area. Very clean construction and I thought the spare tire mechanism was interesting. Note the limited departure angle and 2WD. There's a full size, stand-up, walking pass-through.

From the Desert Fox decal on the right rear, I'm guessing that the "Wombat" camper is a Unicat design, maybe an EX44. The covers over the windows are interesting, designed for security rather helping the occupants see the view.

The "Cruzero del Sur II" is described on the company web site, www.kondor-tours.de It's a tour bus, designed to transport 12 clients plus driver and guide. The back half of the bus carries supplies plus a rest room. The group spends part of the trip camping in remote locations



Kondor Tours has four such buses traveling different itineraries around South America. Looks like an interesting business.

Circumstances: Walking around the neighborhood and spotted this parked along the curb. Came back the next day with a camera and shot these. Very out of place in this neighborhood.

I was looking at their site and some of their trips are from 19 to 36 days. now that is vacation time well spent.

the Desert Fox sticker has nothing to do with Unicat, it is from one of the big German outfitter companys (http://www.daerr.de/).

I passed the Wombat Rig on HWY 41 here in Fresno a few weeks ago. I actually slowed down and let him by me so I could check it out some. May have been coming down from Yosemite. I did not have a camera with me so I'll borrow your photo!

Ex-Rally support truck

Date: 28 January, 2008
Location: Baraloche, Argentina
Chassis: 1998 Mercedes (I may have misunderstood the date, my Spanish is not good)
Rig Info: Ex-pro rally support truck, custom built by small shop in Brazil. Gutted and interior rebuilt by the current owner.
Owners: Brazilian guy doing mountain bike tourist expeditions in Patagonia, uses it as the support truck.
Circumstances: We stopped to camp in Baraloche. Steph stumbled on this rig while walking around the campground. I went back and spent about an hour talking to the guys.
