Expedition duration: started 12/2007, will go as long as finances allow
Expedition comments: 1.5 years in planning; shipped from Europe to Buenos Aires. Rode to Ushuia, Argentina then Chile, Brazil, Bolivia and Peru.
Background: Nine years ago at age 21 went on a solo expedition via motorcycle through Sub-Saharan Africa for eight months.
Vehicle: 1990 Yamaha XT600
Vehicle Kilometers: 94,000; purchased in 2002 with 18,000 kilometers
Expedition Kilometers: 25,000
Vehicle range: 350 kilometers under ideal conditions, 450 kilometers using 5 liter auxiliary can; 250 kilometers under mountainous, high altitude, etc. conditions
Worst aspects of bike: steel rims dent easily and require frequent rebuilds
Best aspects of bike: heated grips, light, easy to maneuver
Comments: Has never felt threatened or afraid for security. Always parks bike inside secure area, e.g. inside hotel compound, guarded parking, etc.
