left side checked... I replace also the big front gasket just in case, all the bearings and sprokets looks ok, right freeplay and good shape....so I feel more relax because we did 15000 km last year, and I was curious to see how afect to increase to almost 1 liter the valvoline, I think is positiveIMG_20200401_133947_copy_780x1040.jpg

I found a problem on the front portal, one of the small sprocket has some marks I dont like, is just in one, so I will replace all the reducer, this is the one I expect to found like this , by the oil migration, so I think is the one reach more temperature, my feeling is the bearings are not ok thats why I fpund this marks and some metal in the oil, I would like to hear the opinion of some one here whit more experience than me whit the portals, thanks in advanceIMG_20200404_141323_copy_780x1040.jpgIMG_20200404_111400_copy_780x1040.jpg

looking all day whit some more info on my hands, I think the damage on the sproket is caming by some vibration...because it is very symetric and I think It just can be the jonit of the Shaft, or the roll bearing inside of the axle tube, I expend this evening to build the tool for untite the sproket from the Shaft....IMG_20200404_165220_copy_780x1040.jpgIMG_20200404_195832_copy_1040x780.jpgIMG_20200404_195948_copy_780x1040.jpgIMG_20200404_200002_copy_780x1040.jpg

Hello! I've had nothing to do with Portal Axles, but have seen plenty of gearboxes and final drives with a lot more wear than that... I personally wouldn't be too worried. What does the surface of the larger gear look like?

yes, I agree whit you , the look is not so bad jus a little bit to be worried, the large sproket has no singnal of damage, but my point is I want to know what is wrong, because this damage is caming from some vibration, I have driving just at 90km/h one vibration on the stering and I asume It was by the tyres, but now I understand something on the shaft is wrong and this is the result, I will replace all the reducer whit the Spare one, and I will keep this as a spare, but I want to solve this problem before to be sure I dont mark again the sproket, thinking yesterday how the system is done , the top back bearing of the portal is a ball bearing , so if the joint on the shaft is damage this ball bearing can transmit the vibration to te sproket..tomorrow I will remove the shaft to check it, thanks Sitec

Can you run the engine and turn this axle over slowly in crawler gear to see if the gear/shaft has any whip or wobble? (suggesting someone in the cab with their foot hovering over the clutch pedal)... Just don't touch the brakes!! :)

I have the vibration at 90km/h....I think is to much to test like this , so I will dissasemmbly tomorrow and I send it to control on the machine, I alrready use a company ho make this thinks very well, for sure now we have a lot of time even to build a truck from "0", thanks for the Idea Sitec...

Hi Jose - I had the 90kmph vibration and went through 5 different wheel balances. Eventually I bought a wheel balancing machine and did some testing. Clip on weights break loose very quickly. Balancing beads helped, but not enough. Stick on weights (as used on mag wheels) worked the best. With sometimes lots of weight my XZL 365/80 runs with no shudder at all at any speed and has done so for 15000kms. I rotate my tyres back to front every 5000 to help even the wear.

hello Graig , the tyres can make some vibration, the one I have is not constant, not allways, thats why I decide to investigate on the shafts, and we must keep in mind om this truck is nice to have a reduction on the hubs because it makes all the transmision can be small in size because the torque it needs to manage is small, but.....the rotation speed is very very high, compare whit normal trucks , so all the bearings and shafts needs to be ok, if not is very easy to have vibration, my one has a problem on the long shaft, its mind , the right one, the point is Now is hard to found the tools to work , so I expend most of the time building tools......The diference in the surface shape on the two axles is quite big on the area where the rollers go.....IMG_20200408_100731_copy_780x1040.jpgIMG_20200408_134336_copy_780x1040.jpgIMG_20200413_202145_copy_1040x780.jpgIMG_20200413_202251_copy_780x1040.jpgIMG_20200413_202528_copy_780x1040.jpgIMG_20200408_201028_copy_780x1040.jpgIMG_20200408_123339_copy_780x1040.jpgIMG_20200409_194703_copy_780x1040.jpgIMG_20200414_132949_copy_780x1040.jpg

Hi, Josst:

Great work, making up all those pretty tools. I remember this phase of the rebuilding of my own truck, using Neardenthalensis tools instead.

You are doing good: change all the races, all the bearings, all the retainers, all the suspect bearings. Sometimes you loose a lot trying to save a little. That's my two cents.

Keep up the good work.

thanks Pairospan, Now this days at home I have time to stop and Use my brain, normally its no time for that, just working and travelling, before allways I Draw by hand All the things I want to build and this is a pleasure I loss, so time to recover it IMG_20200415_094014_copy_780x1040.jpgIMG_20200415_153350_copy_780x1040.jpgIMG_20200415_171354_copy_780x1040.jpgIMG_20200415_201835_copy_780x1040.jpgIMG_20200415_205821_copy_1040x780.jpgIMG_20200416_110637_copy_1040x780.jpgIMG_20200416_121841_copy_1040x780.jpgIMG_20200416_134904_copy_780x1040.jpgIMG_20200416_135322_copy_780x1040.jpgIMG_20200416_135304_copy_780x1040.jpg

thanks Sitec....one day working for 2 min enjoying......the reason why this bearing is a pain in the ass is because has a circlip on the back and it is very easy to damage it, so first to pull remove the front circlip and push the back circlip inside of the axle...the bearing needs to go out whit no damage , if not is not possible to understand if is ok or not....right side was a disaster, left side is okIMG_20200417_122652_copy_780x1040.jpgIMG_20200417_122623_copy_780x1040.jpgIMG_20200417_132053_copy_1040x780.jpgIMG_20200417_132040_copy_1040x780.jpg

going forward Im discovering new details about how the manteinance was good in my truck, and I can say this was not amazing, when I was dissasembling all the front portals I felt untite one of the big bolts on the right knukle, the one of the two M20 who keep the stering bar, and cleaning all to fit again I found a big damage, It was not tight because it was broken and the threat so so, I was lucky because I recover the threath...what is important...the axles are full rebuildIMG_20200423_113130_copy_780x1040.jpgIMG_20200423_165106_copy_780x1040.jpgIMG_20200423_165106_copy_780x1040.jpgIMG_20200423_165110_copy_522x1010.jpgIMG_20200424_123646_copy_780x1040.jpgIMG_20200424_123642_copy_780x1040.jpgIMG_20200424_121334_copy_1040x780.jpgIMG_20200424_132425_copy_780x1040.jpgIMG_20200425_112022_copy_686x643.jpgIMG_20200423_104144_copy_1040x780.jpg
