My Journey

These signs seem like a new policy from the BLM. They seldom placed signs telling visitors how to find tracks and rock art. It just led to more vandalism. So I wonder why the change.

That is some outstanding petroglyphs!

My daughter and I will be out that way this summer. I'll have to make sure we check out the petroglyphs!

Ace.....that's something I hadn't given any thought to but I'd have to agree. My guess is that this got started with the last administration cause it would take the government forever to make & implement that decision (statement not based on any first hand knowledge) and yea they were absolutely stunning petroglyphs so I'll share a few more pictures.....

tgil.....it's a beautiful area of Utah and it's an area of Utah which I had never visited in my past trips. Typically when we wander north we stay to the east of the interstate and stay in the higher mountains but this year we headed north a bit earlier than ever before so I decided that the lower mountains of Utah would be more agreeable.....

Other than the random vehicle driving by, a few of which chose to stop to view the petroglyphs, we had this place entirely to ourselves (almost).....

20220322_171715_copy_1600x778.jpg

So we spent quite a bit of time at the petroglyphs.....

20220322_150635_copy_1600x3291.jpg

We took our time here.....I would imagine that the dogs were hating it.....constantly pulling & yanking while on the leash and probably saying "let's go explore.....this sucks".....

20220322_150646_copy_1600x3291.jpg

But I held my ground as best as I could.....and I read every one of those signs.....and like Ace pointed out.....lots of them here.....

jgaz.....indeed it was some of the finest petroglyphs that I've seen.....

Foy.....hmmmmm.....

Ace.....maybe there is no meaning.....maybe it's art for the sake of art.....

20220322_150624_copy_1600x778.jpg

20220322_150938_copy_1600x778.jpg

The sun began to set.....and we were still out there.....just trying to see what we could see.....

20220322_202402_copy_1600x778.jpg

And even after the sun set.....we were still out there.....just trying to see what we could see.....sometimes I hate nightfall.....I'm just not ready to call it a day. We slept so well that night.....it was calm there.....

20220322_202308_copy_1600x778.jpg

The next morning we went out for a hike.....

20220323_074733_copy_1600x3291.jpg

I would have liked to have explored this cave.....I wonder why it was fenced off.....

20220322_151804_copy_1600x778.jpg

I got to thinking about the past residents of this area.....the petroglyphs.....the mountains. And I thought that they must have climbed the peak above the petroglyphs often so I thought that we should see what they saw.....

20220323_081020_copy_1600x778.jpg

It was real pretty up there.....you can see our campsite below.....

20220323_081024_copy_1600x778.jpg

It seemed as though we could see forever from up there.....360 degrees.....

20220323_081034_copy_1600x318.jpg

And I thought as the sun was rising.....we need to go climb a mountain.....

20220323_081048_copy_1600x317.jpg

We now drove northwest on Highway 21.....passed through Milford, Utah.....and continued on Highway 21 until we came to the turn off for Frisco Peak (9,660').....

20220324_092945_copy_1600x778.jpg

Now I had said that I felt like climbing a peak.....but again this was one of the instances where I use the word climbing loosely.....as there's a road that leads to the summit of this peak.....

20220324_093029_copy_1600x3291.jpg

The road was flat and well graded initially.....it made it easy to take both the truck / camper & the Jeep.....

20220324_093155_copy_1600x778.jpg

Eventually the road became a bit more challenging.....so we dropped the truck / camper.....

20220324_095819_copy_1600x778.jpg

Then the road dropped down into steeper ravines along the north side of the mountain and here we found the first snow.....some spots were pretty deep. At a nice flat, sunny spot we dropped the Jeep.....and now we were in our happy place.....

20220324_101233_copy_1600x778.jpg

Maybe 500 horizontal feet from our parking spot the road got steep.....

20220324_101701_copy_1600x778.jpg

Lots of switchbacks from here to the summit.....but it was still steep.....

20220324_102812_copy_1600x778.jpg

And soon enough more and more of the road was covered in snow.....

20220324_102415_copy_1600x3291.jpg

20220324_111506_copy_1600x3291.jpg

And then we hit the snowline and everything was covered in snow.....

20220324_110241_copy_1600x3291.jpg

We were just having a great day on that mountain.....not another soul for miles and miles.....

20220324_113046_copy_1600x778.jpg

20220324_110655_copy_1600x778.jpg

Unfortunately this summit was developed.....

20220324_114730_copy_1600x778.jpg

There was man made stuff just about everywhere that man could put stuff on that summit.....

20220324_115321_copy_1600x778.jpg

Apparently there's a good spot up there for jumping off the mountain if one feels the need.....

20220324_115306_copy_1600x778.jpg

Just to the north of the summit is Sevier Lake.....I recall camping there a few years back when we were on our way to climbing Wheeler Peak (13,167').....the highest peak in New Mexico.....

20220324_115659_copy_1600x778.jpg

We took the standard summit shot.....

20220323_125513_copy_1600x778.jpg

.....and took in the views.....

20220324_115619_copy_1600x778.jpg

20220323_125706_copy_1600x778.jpg

.....and later that day we drove north.....

20220323_125642_copy_1600x394.jpg

Well.....I'm now (and recently have been) posting approximately 6 weeks back which means I'm dealing with many small memory lapses. So this morning I realized that we actually had hiked to one other mountain summit prior to my last journal entry. Just to keep "My Journey" as accurate as possible, here is our day hiking to the summit of Dry Willow Peak (7,593')....

We were still south of Milton, Utah at this point in our travels.....we were driving north and to the west the landscape was filled with smaller peaks.....and finally the pull to hike one of those peaks became too great so we pulled to the side of the highway and off we went.....

20220323_105907_copy_1600x3291_copy_1200x2468.jpg

Initially our hike was along a four wheel drive road in wide open spaces.....soon enough the road deteriorated and as we hiked higher we entered areas with dense evergreens and spots still covered in snow.....

20220323_114424_copy_1200x2469_copy_1200x2469.jpg

Sadly the road ended at a secluded spot where the locals brought their household goods that were no longer needed.....the trees disappeared with the road and now we just bushwacked our way upwards.....

20220323_122620_copy_1600x778_copy_1200x583.jpg

20220323_120445_copy_1200x2469_copy_1200x2469.jpg

There was one false summit along our way.....we skirted it and looking back I wish we hadn't as it seemed to be much more interesting (rock outcroppings) than the actual summit.....

20220323_120409_copy_1200x583_copy_1200x583.jpg

20220323_123756_copy_1200x2469_copy_1200x2469.jpg

The summit provided us with great views.....I found the remains of some old fencing up there.....I can't even imagine what that could have been used for.....

20220323_125240_copy_1200x2469_copy_1200x2469.jpg

This next picture may or may not be a summit shot of a dog on top of this mountain.....but it is a picture of Tanner on top of a mountain.....

20220323_125455_copy_1200x2469_copy_1200x2469.jpg

I had estimated that this would be a 7 mile roundtrip hike that day.....the route we took was nearly 12 miles with over 3,000' of elevation gain.....Trapper (shown here literally seconds after our return) was dead meat by the time we made it back to the rig.....

20220323_144612_copy_1200x583_copy_1200x583.jpg

We continued north with no planned destination in mind.....at a large pull out along the highway we took a brief break and that brief break was the beginning of our next adventure.....

This roadside plaque was super interesting.....to think that there was once a sprawling town here and now I saw nothing.....

20220324_165047_copy_1600x778.jpg

As we stood there an Earthroamer slowly passed us by and they departed the highway obviously headed somewhere to the east.....the roadside sign caught my attention.....

20220324_164620_copy_1600x778.jpg

And so it was that we too departed the highway and followed the tracks of the Earthroamer.....

20220324_172910_copy_1600x778.jpg

20220324_172326_copy_1600x778.jpg

My thoughts at this point were that we were going to visit a lake.....

20220324_171134_copy_1600x778.jpg

That did not happen.....

20220324_171549_copy_1600x778.jpg

I still had internet connection so a quick stop and search of Pahvant Butte told me that there was more here than just a simple lake.....

20220324_174437_copy_1600x778.jpg

This seemed to be a good place to explore.....

20220324_174421_copy_1600x778.jpg

My eyes scanned that massive butte that was before my eyes.....

20220324_191600_copy_1600x778.jpg

This was a simply amazing place to have stumbled upon.....

20220325_110401_copy_1600x778.jpg

We set up camp on the edge of the sandy road maybe a thousand feet from the base of Pahvant Butte.....

20220324_180346_copy_1600x778_copy_1600x778.jpg

It didn't take us long to leave the rig behind and go explore on foot.....it turned out that the Earthroamer that I wrote of earlier was camped along the rocky cliffs known as Lace Curtain.....we hung out with these people that evening.....and once again in the morning. It's a rare event when I meet people like these.....we exchanged numbers.....something that I think we both admitted that we rarely do. They reside in a mountain town as I kind of (might / maybe) do too.....we have open invitations to visit one another someday.....

20220325_121911_copy_1600x778_copy_1600x778.jpg

When I wasn't chatting with these folks, we were out exploring.....Lace Curtain was absolutely incredible.....

20220324_191931_copy_1600x778.jpg

20220324_191904_copy_1600x778.jpg

20220324_192021_copy_1600x3291.jpg

The dogs and I spent the evening climbing up each and every one of the ravines to check out the countless formations.....they were nearly endless.....

20220324_192625_copy_1600x778.jpg

20220324_192704_copy_1600x778.jpg

20220324_192512_copy_1600x3291.jpg

The sun was setting yet we were still out there exploring.....

20220324_192333_copy_1600x778_copy_1600x778.jpg

20220324_192325_copy_1600x3291_copy_1600x3291.jpg

Sticky9.....same here.....I guess it's like everything in life.....we all have our interests. I'm always amazed and surprised when I see people walk up, snap a few pictures, and quickly move on. That's just not me.....nor you.....

Now the entire time that I'm exploring here, I'm thinking that I need to get to the top of Pahvant Butte.....

20220324_193630_copy_1600x778.jpg

20220324_193234_copy_1600x778.jpg

20220324_193215_copy_1600x3291.jpg

So before darkness fell onto us, we broadened our horizons a bit more and I began to scan the butte looking for possible routes to the summit.....

20220324_191556_copy_1600x778_copy_1600x778.jpg

20220324_194318_copy_1600x778_copy_1600x778.jpg

As darkness fell upon us.....I had finally made my planned route in my head to get up to the top.....but that attempt wouldn't happen that day.....that would be after a good nights' rest.....

20220324_194037_copy_1600x778_copy_1600x778.jpg

20220324_194052_copy_1600x340.jpg

The following morning we began our ascent of Pahvant Butte (5,741').....

20220325_100421_copy_1600x3291.jpg

I found a route that others had used posted on the internet but that route was long as it climbed the butte with multiple switchbacks along the rocky cliff bands.....I decided that the straight up option staying away from the rocky cliff bands was more to my liking.....
