Sure enough. Not what I expected, I wanted less style, more utility, but they'll work. Matte black, don't you think?

By matte I assume you mean flat? I'd go with a Satin Black myself for more longevity. Flat paints just don't seem to last on cars.

Those'll work, and I definitely vote for black. Kind of look like a steel interpretation of the aluminum Gen 2/2.5. Looking forward to seeing them mounted. BTW, do the Gen 3s need rims with a large center hub opening like the Gen 2/2.5s do (108mm, I think)?

I'm with off-roader on this. I have H&R 40mm spacers fitted so the hub opening isn't an issue.

Hmm...so I take it no Gen 3 rims fit Gen 2/2.5s? Not even the stock Mitsu 16" steelies? Please say it ain't so. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Wait, are there even stock Mitsu Gen 3 steelies? I guess I just assumed there were. Maybe they don't exist.

This is a 16x7 steel spare from a 02, 03, 04 Montero Sport. I thought the Gen 3s might've come equipped with the same (pic from EBAY).

Very sorry if I'm thread-jacking, Saint.

Haven't seen g3 steelies but you can always use 6x5.5" lug pattern rims from other rigs. I personally like some of the FJ rims like this one from TRD without the TRD name of course...

Oooo, those are nice off-roader.

I know its after the fact Saint, but I thought for anyone else who's following your thread and looking for utilitarian steelies for their Montero, this is an interesting thread here, albeit inconclusive.

Yeah I almost bought a set for mine but bought the ones I use with my 33's instead.

Yes, the NATO wheel. The closest I came to that was a stock FJ steelie, found on ebay between 50 to 90 bucks. They look good but need to be machined to center correctly with the lugs. Nissan has a similar pattern with the Xterra, which my son drives. I test fit his "NATO" spare, and while the bolt pattern fits, it's not machined to center correctly as well.

How wide were the 33's?! I've had 33x12.5's on stock 15x7's a few times...
They can be mounted but I think pretty much EVERY tire manufacturer recommends a 8-9" minimum rim width for a 12.5" tire. Most reputable shops won't mount them on anything narrower because of that. Not saying they wouldn't work though.
