Grandpa Builds A 2000 Montero

Some of you have asked about my gas mileage since the change to the 4.90 gears. Here is what I got on a recent trip with 85% interstate (70MPH) and 15% secondary paved roads (55MPH). With 2 people and about 350 pounds of cargo. The mileage is GPS corrected with the stock odometer being +6.3%.

Total Miles: 932.5
Average MPG: 16.88
Best MPG: 18.24
Worst MPG: 15.11

I don't have exact numbers from before the gear change but I believe there is a slight MPG improvement. I do notice that the engine is not down shifting as often on longer uphill sections. I think that with the taller tires and the 4.90 gears the engine is close to the original RPM range.

So Grandpa for the quick summary part that I need for my 2000 montero 4.2 --> 4.9 WITH rear locker.

1) front axle 4.9 from Mitsubishi montero sports (2000-2003)
2) rear axle with locker from model 2.0 SR model or 2.5 97 to 99
3) R&P 4.9 from rear axle of Montero Sports
4) drive shaft from Montero Sports? (2000-2003)
5) air compressor from donor car or ARB with regulator

Please advise.

Sorry for the late reply. Your list is correct except #4, I used my stock drive shaft. It's a lot of work. Have fun.

If you order the ARB 3434040 bumper for the 97-00 Montero it doesn't just bolt on. I had to trim the mounts on the bumper and the frame, and drill new holes, to get it mounted.

Do you (or anyone for that matter) have pictures of how the ARB 3434040 bumoer should be modified to fit a US-spec Gen 2.5 Montero?

I have one and it's in my garage ready to be mounted and I am not sure what the best way is to modify the bumper and frame.

I don't remember having to do anything to the bumper. I had to remove the ends of the frame horns and drill holes in the frame.

Thank you, Grandpa. I know I'm resuscitating this thread again, but I've been following since I bought my 2.5. How much of this upper frame horn and bumper mount did you remove? Do you have pictures of what your mounts look like now (or maybe prior to mounting your bumper)?

Nicely done. I hope you're still going on it. (old thread) Not many of these around. I have one (stock ) as a winter driver, but my daughter is borrowing it at the moment.

Also curious on the ARB frame mods. The US spec frame horns are clearly wider than the Pajero. Looks like all of that extra junk could be cut off and a piece of steel box tubing welded to the top of the actual frame rail to fit inside the ARB's brackets. I'm thinking I'd rather modify the horns than the bumper. Just bought an ARB 3434040 and I'm a little disappointed it's not a bolt-on.

Any updates?
Thanks for asking. I haven't been here in a while. No updates on the Montero. I use it regularly for local errands. Most of the updates are about me. I have retired from my full time job and work some contracted hours. We moved to the coast and since there are no public off road areas I don't do any off roading. I'm now involved in muscle cars and boating/fishing.

I have considered selling the Montero but haven't advertised it. If anyone is interested let me know.
