Gen2 overheating when driving slow hills

Sorry I'm late to respond, was a busy week at work. Those tiny electric fans you threw on there without a shroud are only pulling about 60% of the air across 60-70% of the entire radiator compared to the factory fan, add to the lack of air flow across the entire radiator a shroud provides and you have a recipe for hot spots that can actually warp your radiator. Throwing the factory shroud in there on top of the tiny fans will do absolutely nothing for the problem. Install the factory fan with a new clutch from Hayden/Four Seasons along with the shroud and I am fairly certain your issues will go away. Option B is to install a single 18 inch electric fan with custom shroud that ensures air will flow through the entire radiator, but you will have to mount it in a very specific spot on the shroud in order to not interfere with the pulleys on the front of the engine.

Good luck!!

Thanks, I've been looking into mounting a Volvo electric fan with shroud, they're supposed to be the same as the taurus fans that lots of guys use on V8's. I don't want to use the stock clutch fan because of the weak flow at low speed low rpm crawl. I don't want to shift into 4low just to keep the rpms up so I can make it up my driveway without overheating. I've mounted electric fans without shrouds on many other vehicles and never had this problem, but I'm going to try a few different things and see what works. I sent Toasty a PM, I believe he has a Volvo fan on his Montero.

My experience on Montero Over heating that is persistent with out cause(such as major off-roading) is always a head problem, such as improper torque, machined too far down which has happened twice, on a used head recently and on some "NEW" Clearwater heads. Warped heads from prior overheating has caused me trouble as well.

I tow our off road trailer up trails at slow speeds all the time without issue in 2wd, the Hayden fan clutch works as it should.

I'm not saying the clutch fan is insufficient in all cases, mine in particular, I'd rather have an electric fan. As someone a few pages back said, he has 2 monteros that both overheat going uphill, all monteros are not created equally I guess. I may try putting my clutch fan and shroud back on temporarily to see if it'll still overheat.

Ok, Jeep-n-Montero's thoughts on the cooling system made me think about this all over again. I went back to the start and realized something. Correct me if I am wrong. You bought a Montero that had a cooling issue. You replaced basically everything you thought was suspect. You also said before that you made all of these repairs at the same time. Yet you still have this annoying cooling issue under very specific conditions. One thing stands out though. When you did all of the repairs there was one major thing you changed that made the system different from "stock". You changed the cooling fan.
My theory is that Jeep-n-Montero is right. You probably needed a new radiator, yes, but because you changed the system away from stock you never really tested whether it would have been alright with the stock clutch fan. I'll bet you get the stock fan and shroud on there and your problem goes away. Oh and lastly, my IR thermometer has been the best $25 I've spent in a long time. I should start a thread just for that. Ha. Good luck.

I think you guys are right about the electric fans not being quite enough to keep it cool at slow speeds, but I also believe the stock clutch fan is also too weak. Keep in mind, it did overheat before and after I did a coolant flush while still on the stock fan. I'm going to try the higher cfm volvo fan and shroud, if the problem still persists, I'll just switch the the stock fan and get a new fan clutch.

are you going up in 4High or 4low? Mine used to get hot until I started putting in 4Low more often.

It'll get hot in 2wd, 4hi, 4lo, doesn't seem to matter. The first time it got very hot it was on 4Lo on stock fan, most recently it got hot in 2wd on electric fans. The weird part is it hasn't overheated in 95 degree weather in stop and go traffic for 45 minutes.

My job and some people's financial lives depend on me being right, and I'm usually correct when I present useful info related to cars based on repeated experiences.

The AC is usually on, a few times it has gotten hot and I cranked the heater up, but that didn't seem to drop the temp. I ordered the Volvo 960 fan/shroud lastnight and the 2-speed relay, we will see. I don't have any Mitsubishi dealers near me and I couldn't find an OEM fan clutch on ebay. $196 seems a bit steep on the oem mitsu parts site.

I still would make sure the ac condenser fan is working. Mine got warm at idle and in traffic when it stopped working in low 90* temps. Put on a larger universal one and it runs below the halfway point now even in the 106* temps with the a/c full blast.

The condenser fan is spinning, but not particularly fast. I was thinking about wiring it to ignition on so it's always going.

has you tested the coolant for combustion gasses? it could be that you just have a tiny headgasket leak allowing some exhaust to enter the cooling system and for an air pocket
