Sweet set up! Can you enlighten me on how you attached the quickfists in the bed for the fire extinguisher/shovel/hi lift? Did you just run a bolt through the bed? How do you like the placement? How's it holding up? Thinking about doing the rear storage build myself but want to hear your opinion on that solution for the bigger objects.

Thanks

I used 3/16 diameter steel rivets to hold the quick fists. The placement was pretty good. Held up no problem. I have since gone to a completely different set up with a drawer/sub floor and tent rack etc. Shows that in post 28

Finished wire wheeling frame. Then wiped everything with soapy water followed by a rinse. Got one coat of POR-15 on the diff and frame up passed the front hanger. Took about 1/2 a can. Will need to buy a second to get 3 coats.

I did this to an 85 4Runner 20 years ago. But I sprayed. The overspray got between my mask and eye protection.

I admire what you are doing - that’s a lot of effort! Are you top coating with something uV resistant?

Thanks. Ya it’s been lots of work. Wasn’t planning a top coat on it. Do you think it’s worth it? I figure there’s not much sun getting to the underside

If you have the time, i would definitely top coat. On both my 85 and the 86 that i brushed, the second coat of.POR started to peal. Not sure if it was from UV or something else.... But since you are this far, another couple.of hours may be good insurance????

I don't think you have to worry about uv underneath the truck now much sun getting down there

Got bored of waited for paint to dry so decided to do more painting. When I had the canopy it was from a double cab and wore off paint on each corner. Decided to paint a strip around the box to cover all the bare metal before it rusts. Used tremclad semi gloss black. Here’s the first coat of probably 4-6.

Nice work on the frame prep and painting. I really need to do the same. What are the advantages of POR-15 over something like Rustoleum?

Finished the paint strip on the top of the box. It’s there but not that noticeable. Covers the bare metal and that’s all I really care about as there’s lots of scratching on the paint anyway.

Also installed a large quick-fist at the back of the box for a fire extinguisher. Can fit both my 8lb and 10lb. Can get it out with the tailgate locked for safety. If I need to park somewhere questionable I’d move it in the cab but that’s few and far between.

Now to stop procrastinating and get another coat of POR on.

Got the second coat done today. It went on thinner (more properly) so I should get a third coat out of the 1 can. Bit of advice to anyone using this stuff especially under the truck... do not get it in your hair. It will not come out and clumps together like crazy. My hair was due for a cut and that fixed it but it was a pain while in. I wore a toque for the second coat for the accidental bumps and brushes with painted areas. Getting excited to start assembly but unfortunately it may be a while as I work till Christmas then lots of activities for it so it could be a couple weeks. Hope to get the last coat of POR done tomorrow or Friday.

Finished third coat on Friday. Last night I bolted on the new shackle mount and 6” shackle.
