Looking at all your photos I wonder to myself about rules and regs.

Are you allowed to camp anywhere that you can drive? So much open terrain and I wonder looking at it if you are restricted to campgrounds and reservations and all that mess?

Yes, you must have a backcountry permit and camp in designated sites in the National Park. If you desire a specific campsite (Especially on the White Rim Trail) I would recommend resverations. It is very easy to check availability and make them online. However, we made all of our arrangement at the ranger station on arrival.
