300K miles on the ol' 6.5L diesel....

That's what I meant, if the right 6.5 burb or 2 door came along at the right time, that's what I would buy.

My buddy I sold my last 6.5 truck to put the drivetrain into a 4 Dr Yukon on 38s so it scoots along not too bad with the NV4500, a team turbo, and all the other goodies I put on over the years.

Now thats a build thread I would like to see...:victory:

I loved my '96 K2500 Sub' 4x4 w/ the 6.5td... but the IP gave up and I was faced with a big dilemma between replacing that or moving on to something else. I too had already upgraded and or corrected all the little issues that plague these trucks. I just couldn't justify putting even more money into it and our needs really switched to that of a truck. Luckily, someone with the skills to replace the pump got a great deal on it... hopefully she's out there still.

Doty I am sure that someone got good use out of your truck. I am in the same position having to replace the pump and electrics. I always repair my vehicles. I find it a better option than starting on something new..:coffeedrink:

I'm not sure what I will do with mine when the pump gives out... (reman'd aren't expensive from badger diesel they are >500 for the DS2 and DS4 pumps) but i'll be thinking about either to scrap the electronics and just go DS2 or stay with a new DS4.
At that point I will have (hopefully) already swapped in a NV4500 so I won't have to worry about a trans controller for the 4L80e trans if I go DS2.

Thanks for the heads up on that gear drive lt1fire. good to know! And I would be happy to see any other links you might have to the GM 6.5 and the Optimiser. You keep that rig ROCKIN now as you are getting some serious mileage on her.. cheers, Chilli...:wings:

other good places for 6.5 stuff is

Badger Diesel (recommended for injection pumps and injectors)
Leroy Diesel (pretty much everything you could need for one)
Walking J Designs
Lubrication Specialists (for Oil Line replacements, I highly recommend to anyone to chuck the factory crap and go with SS from either Leroy or Lubrication)

Other well known ones that in my opinion can be a bit pricey are SS diesel, Kennedy Diesel, Heath Diesel

After i'm done fixing all the little things my final playthrough on this engine will be

Diamond eye 4" exhaust, down pipe and cross over pipe
A custom airbox or S&B CAI that seals well and I can custom install a FJ80 snorkel on to it
Feed the Beast Mod
A team turbo
Either an intercooler or methanol/water injection
NV4500 Swap
Custom Tune dual chip tune from Buddy or KOJO (3 settings, economy, tow and offroad)
Electro magnetic fan clutch from Leroy

(modify the actual truck for more expo/4x4 adventures)

Then see how many miles I can rack up.... when the motor eventually goes boom i'll figure out what to do then.

Thank you for the links sir. Good to have some supliers for when you need to get new gear...:wings:

UPDATE APRIL 2024

Well, it's been a while since I updated this thread!! I still own the Tahoe, and she now has over 400K miles!

The original factory engine went 378K miles before she finally blew a head gasket in July of 2022. Long story short, I ended up rebuilding a low mileage, later model 6.5L that I had in my possession and dropped her in. I also rebuilt the original 4L80E and transfer case while I was at it.

Here's a pretty recent picture of the girl:

So while the engine and transmission only have about 30K miles on them, the rest of the body and chassis still have have 408K. I do have some rust starting to pop out on the rocker panels, so I will be tackling that soon, but otherwise I hope to get another 300K out of her! :D

Bought the engine used of off hummer h1 with 21.000 miles on it, for this roller humvee in 2015,
after that i put 4000 hours and counting on this 6.5 TD,
Countless 260 degree overheats with bad radiator on its early build days,
run it on multiple mixed fuels, and still amazing reliability ❤️
( I don’t know what 4000 hours translates to )
Those DB2 injection pumps are amazing,
