I'll write something up
I'm curious to hear, too. I'll share my past few camper shell setups:

I had an ARE MX on my Frontier for 5-6 years. It was a good setup. I liked the extra headroom (more usable than cab-height on mid-size trucks for both cargo and camping). I found cab-height to be fine for my old full-size F250s (still bigger than MX on mid-size). Only downside on the MX was roof rack/lumber. It isn't even with the cab of the truck. I had a rack but the spread between the bars was pretty minimal. 3-4' maybe? So carrying 12, 14, 16' lumber was iffy. And centered longitudinally meant it stuck far out the rear end.
For about a year I swapped to a Softopper setup + customized aluminum truck rack (I made it "outside the shell" so It could co-exist cleanly with the soft topper no matter what configuration it was in (up, folded or removed). That worked well. I had stopped camping inside the topper because even the 6' bed is too small (I'm 6'2") so the minor weather entry issues with Softtoppers wasn't a concern.

I would have kept the Softtopper when I went from a 2008 Frontier to 2015 but I got a shortbed and automatic for drivability reasons in the city. The "new" truck came with a cab-height topper and Alu-rack rack which I'm satisfied with. If I had to start from scratch (and pay retail) I'd go Soft topper again.

What I *really* want is one of these $$$ pop-top camper shells though (GFC/AluCab/etc) ! Get in contact if you've got one for a 5' Frontier and want to take a huge loss. ;-)
