2016 JKUR, AKA Dad's MiniVan

So the night before last I went ahead and picked up a new 2016 JKUR in Rhino color. I've thoroughly enjoyed the 2010 its replacing but it could not keep up with our longterm plans to travel North America with a custom teardrop in tow. So, out with the old and in with the new...

So, I wanted a pretty basic Rubicon and was able to find it pretty much exactly as I wanted. The only options it has on it were the connectivity group, auto tranny, hardtop, 4.10 gear ratio and 430N radio. Didn't really want the 430N either but short of ordering one without it, no one within 200 miles had exactly what I wanted. I will have to say that the radio in this thing absolutely sucks. I have not had a new vehicle with such poor sound quality since my '92 F150XL work truck and it might have actually been better.

My plans are to build it similar to the 2010 with several parts carrying over from it but I'll be using higher quality parts this time around such as the winch and bumpers. Heres a list of my plans currently

JKS J-Kontrol 3.5" suspension system - Ordered 03/11/16
Adams Driveshaft front CV shaft - Been sitting new in box for awhile
315/70/17 Cooper ST Maxx on Black Rock wheels - Carryover from the 2010
Rubicon HardRock rear Bumper - Carryover
AEV tire carrier - Carryover
JW Speaker Headlights - Carryover
Morimoto XB LED fog lights
Front Bumper TBD. Needs to be able to add front hitch
Warn Zeon 10-s
TeraFlex Nebo roof rack
Frontrunner Cargo slide
ARB underhood air compressor
S-pod switch system - Ordered 03/11/16
KC Hilites 6" HID driving lights
Wild Boar front grab bars - Ordered 03/11/16
LED interior light bulb replacements
Aries Styleguard Front and Rear Floormats - ordered 03/11/16
Major stereo upgrades TBD...

I'll update as I progress, hope to start the suspension install next week.

I'm excited to see the difference between Rhino and Anvil. Good luck with the build! Looks like you are going to be busy!:Wow1:

I really wanted anvil truth be told, even tried to buy a '14 JKURx in anvil but someone signed the papers on it as I arrived. Rhino is growing on me more and more but it's awfully dark and around here most of our off-roading involves tight, narrow tree lined trails. A little pin striping is to be expected.

Man that sucks! I would have gone for the '14 even more because of the powertrain warranty being 100K vs. 60K I believe with the new '16s. I've got a few pinstripes with mine, they are still noticeable not not as much as something like black.

Think of it this way, if Jeep REALLY screws up the next gen Wrangler, you lucked out and bought on of the last "True" Jeeps! (Im sure I'm going to get some heat from this) "Oh the CJ was the last real Jeep"
lol.

Have fun with it man!

Very cool!

Will be fun to follow along the build.
Some guys are using a paint protector coating that they really like. I can't remember the names of the coatings, but from the pictures they've posted I am impressed.
Might be worth looking in to.

I'm looking into getting an XPEL wrap done on mine to protect the paint. I might go with a matte finish too.

So I couldn't help myself, I just had to see how the '16 with 4.10 gears is with 35's (315's). So a quick swap was in order. They fit with no lift but had to remove the air dam so as not to rub. Any amount of flex and there'd be a few things damaged so it'll be awhile before it leaves pavement

The rubicon wheels and tires are going on the 2010.

I'm very impressed with the '16 on 35's with the 4.10 gears, it's almost like it was made for the buyer who planned to lift and install bigger tires. But I do have one problem, the TPMS sensors don't recognize the jeep as the '16s are on the '10 and vice versa. I'm guessing I'll have to make a trip to the tire shop to get everything swapped around but maybe it's as simple as a reflash at the dealer. I'll have to dig around unless someone knows the answer.

^ They simply need to be paired to the vehicle. Check your owner's manual. They probably have a proceedure to do it yourself (GM you put them in learn mode and add or remove about 5psi, set to the correct pressure after they're all learned. The owners manual indicates this, Fords are essentially the same)

You can also buy a "relearn tool" that essentially just activates the RFID tag in the sensor. They're like $25 from Napa, or wherever.

Like that, but you should be able to find them cheaper.

Everything I have found says they changed the tpms frequency in 2013. Only solution is to get appropriate year group tpms. You can sometimes find them on jeep forums for sale.

Ah. I didn't realize they changed them, that's a big year gap, so it's more than possible. Heck Ford has a huge overlap where they used two different style sensors.

There are pleanty of aftermarket options out there that are cheaper and don't rot out like the stock aluminum ones Mopar was using for a while.

So a quick look on rockauto.com shows the 2010 TPMS sensors at 315 MHz and the 2016 at 433 MHz. Sounds like a trip to discount tire is in order to have them swapped around...
